UNF – American Fine Thread
UNF is an inch-based fine thread that belongs to the American National fine thread series. Alongside the even finer UNEF, it is the second fine thread type defined in the ANSI/ASME B 1.1 Unified Thread Standard (UTS), and is frequently used for screws and nuts. This type of thread is comparable to the metric fine thread.
Everything You Need to Know About UNF Threads
The UNF thread is an inch-based thread with a 60° flank angle and a smaller pitch compared to the American coarse thread UNC. All dimensions are given in inches, with the pitch specified in threads per inch. Like other UTS thread types, UNF is mainly used in the USA for threaded fasteners.
The designation of a UNF thread generally follows this formula: outer diameter in inches, threads per inch, abbreviation. For a UNF thread with an outer diameter of 1/2″ and 20 threads per inch, you would find the entry 1/2″ – 20 UNF in the table. The first ten sizes, however, are assigned fixed numbers that replace the outer diameter in the designation, e.g. #4 – 48 UNF.
Unified National Fine Threads – Our Product Range
In the BAER online shop, you’ll find a wide selection of tools and accessories for UNF threads. We offer the right solution for every material and every cutting scenario. You can rely on the quality and long service life of our products.
Thread Cutting Sets for UNF Threads
Sets and assortments include a coordinated selection of tools and are always a good choice when you want a reliable starter kit without a long search. We offer UNF sets with taper thread taps and hand taps:
- The UNF set with taper thread taps also includes matching twist drills and dies. This way, you can create both the perfect core hole and external thread. Sizes from UNF 1/4 - 1/2" are covered.
- Sets with hand taps are available in four ranges: UNF 1/4 - 1/2", UNF 1/4 - 3/4", UNF 1/4 - 1", and UNC/UNF 1/4 - 3/4". They include taps, dies, and all necessary holders for manual use.
All sets come in suitable boxes where tools can be stored clearly and well protected. This ensures clean storage and safe transport with ease.
Thread Taps for UNF Threads
If you don’t need a complete set or are looking for a specific tool, you can of course purchase our UNF thread taps individually. The selection is extensive and includes many thread sizes and use cases. First, choose between taper thread taps, hand taps, and machine taps.
Our taper thread taps in Form D are made of ground HSS and are ideal for a wide range of applications. These tools create threads in a single pass and can also be operated by hand, unlike machine taps – offering additional flexibility.
Hand taps are designed for manual use. To cut fine threads by hand, you’ll need both a roughing and a finishing tap. You can purchase these from us as a two-piece set or individually, in case you need a replacement. Hand taps are available for both right- and left-hand threads.
For UNF fine threads, our range includes machine taps in Form B for through holes and Form C for blind holes. In addition to versions for standard use, we also carry tools suitable for stainless steel.
Thread Formers for UNF Threads
Thread formers create threads by displacing material rather than cutting it. The process is more demanding and not suitable for all materials, but it also offers advantages such as high surface quality and long tool life. Our thread formers for UNF threads are made of HSSE-TIN.
Thread Dies for UNF Threads
UNF external threads can also be created easily with BAER tools. Use our round thread dies in combination with a suitable die holder to cut external threads by hand. With the right adapter, they can also be used in machines. We offer round dies for standard applications with right- or left-hand threads as well as for stainless steel use.
Hex dies for UNF threads are especially flexible, as they can be used with a standard ring or open-end wrench. This makes quick repairs easy and also allows access to hard-to-reach areas.
Thread Gauges for UNF Threads
Thread gauges are used to check the fit of a thread. This helps you determine whether your tools are still producing accurate threads. For UNF threads, we offer a selection of ring gauges and plug gauges. If needed, you can also order calibration services directly.
