Let's be honest: have you ever fallen for an offer on the internet that sounded too good to be true and ended up ordering a tool set of inferior quality? Or were you unable to resist the appealing presentation and the temptingly low price at the hardware store or the discount shop around the corner? You can tell us, it's just between us. And ultimately, that's just part of what makes us craftspeople tick – the pull of a well-stocked socket wrench set is something people with other hobbies will simply never understand.

The trouble is, poor quality has an annoying habit of dragging a whole string of unpleasant consequences behind it. "Buy cheap, buy twice" – your grandfather probably knew that too, and the saying is more relevant than ever in times when we're being flooded with poorly made bargain products. Especially when it comes to twist drill bits, we at BAER hear time and again about problems that could have been avoided if high-quality HSS drill bits had been used instead of the cheap drill set from the bargain bin. That's why what follows is our plea for high-quality twist drill bits. Read on, and if you're not convinced by the end, you're welcome to go for the top deal at €14.99 next time.

Tool breakage and workshop frustration: Why cheap tools can become a problem

A twist drill bit has to withstand a lot, especially with hard materials, high cutting speeds and large diameters. If it reaches its stress limit, the tool breaks and may also damage the workpiece in the process. In the worst case, you could even injure yourself. Either way – the money is gone and you're left without a drill bit.

But it doesn't even have to go that far. Even when the tool does its job as hoped, the quality of the results still suffers. On top of that, with inferior products you can never be entirely sure whether the dimensions and geometry are truly precise. That may be acceptable when you just want to quickly hang a picture on the wall, but with any larger project, a few millimetres more or less can make an enormous difference.

Precision, tool life, efficiency – included with quality tools

Apart from the price, there are really no good arguments for cheap drill bits – and even the financial advantage quickly melts away once the lack of quality makes itself felt. HSS drill bits are less prone to breakage than carbide drill bits, so you get more longevity from your purchase. Coatings such as TiN or TiAlN further increase the wear resistance and cutting speed of high-quality HSS drill bits. And when wear does set in, it's not the end, because HSS drill bits can be resharpened.

A twist drill is drilling a hole in a steel plate. Chips and a calliper lie beside it.

And throughout this long service life, perfect results can be expected even under difficult conditions, because HSS drill bits retain their sharpness and hardness at high friction temperatures. HSS drill bits also enable up to four times higher cutting speeds compared to conventional steel drill bits.

HSS drill bits are the best all-rounders for workshop and industry, combining longevity, precision and excellent value for money. You buy a set of high-quality HSS drill bits once and enjoy them for a long time, while the work flows easily and you don't have to deal with frustrating incidents.

HSS, HSS-E, HSS-G: What is the difference?

The differences between HSS drill bits lie in the alloy and the type. Without any further addition, the abbreviation HSS stands for High Speed Steel, a high-quality base material for most standard applications. HSS drill bits are ideal for use in steel, cast steel, non-ferrous metals and plastics.

HSS-Co 5 / Co 8 drill bits are extremely durable and tough, suitable for stainless steel and high-strength steel. The cobalt-alloyed HSS drill bits have increased heat resistance, which is particularly important when working with stainless steel, as the friction can cause significant heat build-up. These twist drill bits are also referred to as HSS-E drill bits, but the alloy is the same.

HSS-G drill bits enable precise drilling with good chip evacuation and are ideal for alloyed/unalloyed steels and non-ferrous metals. The G suffix refers to the manufacturing method (ground), which ensures particularly high precision.

In addition to the high-performance material, the twist drill bit can then undergo various surface treatments or receive a coating that enhances desired properties. In this way, temperature resistance is further increased or sliding properties are improved. This turns a simple twist drill bit into a high-performance tool that can handle hard and tough metal and always delivers perfect results.
