Everything You Need to Know About HSS Twist Drills with Reduced Shank According to DIN 338-A
Our HSS-R twist drills are made of high-alloy high-speed steel (HSS – High Speed Steel) and are standardized according to DIN 338. They feature a tapered relief grind, are roll-forged (hence the “R” in the designation), and have a vaporized surface. The drills are right-hand cutting, type N, and have a point angle of 118°.
Thanks to their reduced shank (Ø 13 mm), drills with larger nominal diameters can also be used in standard drilling machines. This makes HSS-R drill bits particularly versatile – from cordless drills to pillar drilling machines.
The HSS material makes these twist drills not only powerful metal drill bits, but true all-rounders: they are suitable for drilling steel and cast steel (alloyed and unalloyed), grey cast iron, malleable cast iron, ductile iron, sintered iron, nickel silver, graphite, bronze, brass, and aluminum.
The roll-forged manufacturing process ensures high break resistance, reliable chip evacuation, and stable cutting edges. In addition, HSS allows cutting speeds up to four times higher than conventional tool steel – a clear advantage for repeated drilling or series work.
