Tap extension: use and possibilities

Tap extension: use and possibilities

Reading time: 4 minutes

If you have ever cut a thread by yourself, you will know that it requires ample space. The tool must be set at the right angle, and ample freedom of movement is crucial when manually cutting threads. Normally, this isn't an issue. But what do you do when the area of operation isn't easily accessible? Based on our experience, homemade solutions or the "rough estimate" approach rarely lead to desired outcomes. Thankfully, there's a professional solution for hard-to-reach places.

This simple yet ingenious device is called a tap extension. It does precisely what its name implies. In a sturdy and safe manner, this tool extends the reach of your tap, enabling you to cut threads in hard-to-reach areas with ease. Let's delve deeper into how this works and examine an alternative to this approach.

When do you need a tap extension?

You'll quickly realize the need for a tap extension when you can't easily access the spot intended for thread cutting. This is common when the thread is located deep within the workpiece. It's virtually impossible to reach such depths using an ordinary tap. Furthermore, the geometry of a workpiece can hinder proper positioning. Sometimes, obstruction by interference edges can also be an issue. Although sometimes you can resolve this by disassembling obtrusive setups or altering the assembly sequence, often this can be impractical. A tap extension, thanks to its slim design, provides easy access and ensures safe operation.

Using a tap extension

Tap extensions are straightforward in design and application. They are placed between the tap and the holding tool or machine, significantly extending the tap's reach. The exact method varies depending on the tap extension design. Some models have both internal and external square shafts. The external square shaft fits into a holding tool, such as a tap wrench, while the internal square shaft accommodates the tap. Other versions might include a collet or an integrated mechanism for coolant supply for machine operation.

After setting up, you can use the tap as usual. When selecting the right tap extension, ensure it's designed for the thread size you intend to cut and that its length meets your needs. It's also essential to invest in robust, high-quality tools. Tap extensions adhere to the DIN 377 standard, so ensure the product you purchase references this standard.

The benefits of a tap extension are clear. It offers an affordable solution to a common problem, eliminating the need to purchase new taps. Once you no longer need the added length, you can easily remove the tap extension and use the tap in its standard form.

The alternative: long and extra-long taps

Apart from tap extensions, another solution to cut threads in hard-to-reach areas is to use specially designed tools. These overlength taps, recognizable by their notable dimensions, are referred to as long or extra-long taps. These taps have a conventional head but come with an exceptionally long shaft, allowing deep penetration or maneuverability around obstructive edges.

Extra-long taps are specialized tools most suitable for regular work in hard-to-reach areas. Being made of one piece, they're somewhat sturdier than their extension counterparts. However, they lack the flexibility of being adjustable for length when not needed.

You can find tap extensions and taps in both long and extra-long versions at the BAER online shop. As a tap manufacturer, we can also craft custom solutions to suit your specific needs. Almost anything is possible! Our record holder is a tap with a 1000 mm length, ensuring you can reach even the most secluded spots. Feel free to contact us with your inquiries!
