Flank Angle
The flank angle is the angle between the flanks of a thread – i.e. between the sides of the thread turns; it defines the shape of the thread profile.
Significance:
- Influences how load is distributed (e.g. how force-locked the connection is).
- Different standards have different flank angles (e.g. metric ISO thread, Whitworth, trapezoidal).
Practical example:
A metric ISO thread typically has a flank angle of 60°. This angle ensures good load capacity and easy manufacture.
