Tool Life
Tool life indicates how long a tool (e.g. tap, insert) remains in service before it needs to be resharpened, re-ground or replaced.
Influencing factors:
- Tool material (e.g. HSS, HSSE, coated).
- Workpiece material being machined (stainless steel, steel, aluminium etc.).
- Cooling, lubrication, feed rate and cutting speed.
Practical example:
An HSSE tap in hardened steel has a longer tool life than a standard HSS tap under the same conditions.
