BSW – British Standard Whitworth Coarse Thread
British thread types are particularly relevant in Germany when it comes to Whitworth pipe threads. However, there are other inch-based threads that see broad application. One of these is the British Standard Whitworth (BSW), the British coarse or standard thread. This thread type can be compared in its application to the metric standard thread and also has a long history. Although it has lost significance outside Great Britain, it remains one of the best-known and most important threads in the world.
Everything You Need to Know About the British Standard Whitworth Thread
The BSW thread gained special importance mainly because it was the first thread standard in history. It dates back to the British engineer Joseph Whitworth, who is regarded as the father of thread standards and presented the design in 1841. In honor of the inventor, the name Whitworth is still retained, even though BSW has long been part of the British Standards as BS 84.
BSW is an inch-based thread with a 55° flank angle. As with American inch-based thread types, the pitch is specified in revolutions per inch or threads per inch (TPI). It is a coarse thread and the standard in Great Britain for a screw-nut connection without special requirements.
The thread designation consists of the letter W for Whitworth and the outer diameter in inches, e.g. W 1/4 or W 3/8. Especially in German-speaking regions, caution is advised because G pipe threads are often colloquially called “Whitworth,” which can lead to confusion.
British Coarse Thread – Our Product Range
In our BAER online shop, you will find a wide selection of threading tools for the BSW thread. Choose from individual taps or dies or take advantage of our carefully assembled thread-cutting sets – the choice is yours.
Thread Cutting Sets for BSW Threads
Thread cutting sets for the BSW thread can be ordered with either taper thread taps or hand taps. Our set with taper thread taps is suitable for sizes BSW 1/4" to BSW 1/2". In addition to the taps, it includes matching twist drills for the core hole and dies for creating BSW external threads. Thanks to the versatility of the taper thread taps, you can work manually or with a power drill.
Our comprehensive sets with hand taps cover various BSW size ranges and even include tools for cutting BSF fine threads. They contain all the hand taps and dies needed for BSW external and internal threads, along with the appropriate holders—tap wrenches and die stocks in the required sizes. The sturdy wooden box not only ensures neat storage and secure transport but also impresses with its high-quality look.
Thread Taps for BSW Threads
If you don’t need a full kit, you can purchase all our thread taps individually. We offer taper thread taps, hand taps, and machine taps—entirely to your specification.
Our BSW taper thread taps produce the thread in one pass. They are suitable for both manual and machine use. The tools are made from high-quality HSSG for precise results and long service life.
Hand taps are available in standard sets of roughing, intermediate, and finishing taps. If you need to replace a tool, you can buy it individually. Our hand taps are also made of HSSG, and we offer both right- and left-hand versions.
For machine taps, choose between Form B with roll chamfer for through holes and Form C for blind holes. The spiral flutes eject chips against the cutting direction, making chip evacuation easy. Made from cobalt-alloyed HSSE, these tools are exceptionally robust and long-lasting.
Dies for BSW Threads
Of course, you can also produce BSW external threads with BAER tools. We stock two die types:
Our round dies are offered for both right-hand and left-hand threads. They suit all standard BSW applications and sizes and can be used by hand or machine. A die stock is needed for manual use, and with the right adapter, the dies can be easily clamped into bench machines.
The hex dies, by contrast, can be driven with a standard ring or open-end wrench, making them highly flexible and perfect for quick repairs in hard-to-reach spots without dismantling the entire assembly.
