NPTF – American National Pipe Taper Fuel Thread
The NPTF thread belongs to the American pipe thread types. The abbreviation stands for National Pipe Taper Fuel—a designation that already hints at its key characteristics. Taper means conical and Fuel refers to its preferred use in fuel lines. Although there are many U.S. pipe thread standards, NPTF is most often contrasted with the similarly tapered NPT thread.
Everything You Need to Know About NPTF Pipe Threads
The NPTF pipe thread is a tapered or conical thread with a taper angle of 1°47″ and a flank angle of 60°. Unlike NPT threads, the flanks of NPTF threads converge to a sharp point—this is the basis of its defining feature. NPTF is a self-sealing thread, meaning it can be installed without additional sealant. This property is known in English as Dryseal. However, because the seal relies on deformation of the thread peaks, the seal is not guaranteed after disassembly and reassembly.
Thread designations consist of the nominal diameter in inches, threads per inch, and the NPTF abbreviation, for example 1/4″ – 18 NPTF or 3/8″ – 18 NPTF. As with all inch-based pipe threads, the nominal diameter does not match the actual major diameter of the thread.
NPTF Threads – Our Product Range
In our range you’ll find everything you need to cut NPTF internal or external threads and to check finished threads with gauges. You can always rely on the outstanding quality and precise manufacturing of our tools.
NPTF Taper Taps
NPTF taper taps are available in two styles in our online shop. The straight-fluted Form C taps suit through or blind holes, while Form B with roll chamfer should only be used for through holes.
These taps can be held in a machine tap holder, but with a tap wrench you can also cut NPTF threads by hand in a single operation.
Our NPTF taper taps are made of high-quality high-speed steel for excellent performance and long service life.
NPTF Round Dies
External NPTF threads are equally easy to cut with our premium round dies, available in many sizes. You can mount them in a machine adapter or use a die stock—ideally with a guide—to cut by hand, giving you maximum flexibility!
NPTF Thread Gauges
When it comes to secure sealing, even small deviations matter. It’s worth checking that your tools are still within tolerance to avoid errors and ensure compliance—essential in professional settings.
You can quickly and reliably check your NPTF thread dimensions with our gauges, available as plug gauges for internal threads and ring gauges for external threads.
Using them is simple: insert the plug gauge into the thread or screw the ring gauge onto it. If you need calibration, we can handle that in-house quickly and easily.
