Rp (BSPP) – Cylindrical Pipe Threads
The BSPP thread is an imperial thread and part of the British Standard Pipe series. The abbreviation stands for British Standard Pipe Parallel. The term Parallel indicates that BSPP, like the BSP thread (also known as G thread according to DIN ISO 228), is a cylindrical thread. Unlike BSP, however, BSPP is sealing. It is combined with a tapered R thread, creating a seal within the thread itself.
Everything you need to know about BSPP Whitworth pipe threads
The BSPP thread is an imperial thread. This means all dimensions such as diameters are given in inches, and the pitch is expressed as the number of threads per inch. The thread has a flank angle of 55°, which differentiates it from American pipe threads. Combining different thread types for pipe connections is therefore not possible – they are not compatible.
As with other imperial pipe threads, BSPP has a particularity regarding the outside diameter. This is not identical to the nominal diameter. The reason lies in historical pipe forms which had different outer-to-inner diameter ratios than modern pipes. These designations have become so established that they were never adapted to current pipe dimensions.
British Standard Pipe Parallel Threads – Our product range
In the BAER online shop, you’ll find everything you need to produce and inspect BSPP internal threads. In manufacturing our tools, we place great importance on the quality of the base materials and on precision production. That’s how we’re able to offer tools that deliver perfect results and ensure long tool life.
BSPP forming taps
Our forming taps provide great flexibility at work. They can be used manually or in a machine, cutting threads in just one operation. Our taps are Form C with straight flutes, suitable for both through and blind holes up to twice the thread diameter. Made from robust HSSG, these tools are ideal for all easily machinable materials and ensure a smooth workflow.
BSPP thread plug gauges
If you want to make sure your thread is within the specified tolerances, you should use a plug gauge to test it. The limit plug gauge has two sides. This allows you to determine with one tool whether the thread is too large or too small. We’re also happy to calibrate your gauge in-house. Simply add this service to your order.
