BSF – British Standard Fine Thread
In Germany, the name Whitworth is primarily associated with the pipe thread of the same name, which also belongs to the British thread system. However, there are many other threads named after the British engineer who is regarded as the father of thread standardisation. Confusion is therefore easy. The Whitworth fine thread is based on the BSW coarse thread and thus looks back on a long tradition. Screws with a BSF fine thread are not encountered very often outside the British machine tool industry. Should this nevertheless be the case, BAER ensures that you can work with this type of thread without any problems.
Everything You Need to Know About the British Standard Fine Thread by Joseph Whitworth
The British standard BS 84 defines a coarse thread (BSW), which roughly corresponds in use to the metric coarse thread. In addition, as in the metric system, there is a corresponding fine thread, the BSF. Together with the well-known pipe thread, they share the flank angle and the designation “Whitworth”, but otherwise they are independent thread types.
Two characteristics are decisive when comparing the BSF thread standardised according to BS 84 with fastening threads commonly used in Germany: the flank angle and the unit of measurement. The flank angle of BSW and BSF is 55°. Most American or European fine threads such as UNF or MF, on the other hand, have an angle of 60°. BSF is also an inch-based thread. This means that dimensions such as the outside diameter are specified in inches. The pitch is also defined differently – not by the distance between two thread peaks, but by the number of threads per inch.
In thread tables, the abbreviation BSF and the outside diameter are given together as the designation. Common sizes include BSF 3/16″, BSF 7/32″, BSF 1/4″ or BSF 1″. In addition to the diameter, tables usually also include information on the pitch and conversion into metric values.
BSF Threads – Our Range
If you want to produce a BSF fine thread yourself, you need the right tools. At BAER, you will find high-quality materials, a wide selection and all common sizes from BSF 3/16″ to BSF 1″.
Taps: BSF 7/16 × 18, BSF 3/8 × 20, BSF 5/8 × 14 and more
We offer taps for BSF internal threads and nuts in two versions:
- Single-cut taps for fast and precise results – ideal for manual use or with stationary drilling or tapping machines.
- Hand taps for manual applications, available as two-piece sets consisting of a taper tap and a finishing tap.
Dies: BSF 7/8 × 11, BSF 3/16 × 32, BSF 5/16 × 22 and more
Our BSF dies are the first choice for screws, bolts and threaded rods. Whether machine-driven or manual – they ensure reliable BSF threads. We also offer BSF hex dies for rethreading or hard-to-reach areas.
