Hand tap sets - cut internal threads safely
At BAER we believe that every workpiece can only be as accurately machined as the tool used is precise. This is especially true when tapping with a hand tap! We want our customers to look at their work with pleasure and pride. That is why it is a matter of the heart for us to always deliver the highest precision and best quality in the manufacture of our tools. From the raw material to production, logistics and shipping - our guiding principle is excellence. To this end, we do not rest on our laurels, but work hard to constantly improve even further.
We want to help you succeed in your work. Whether you are a large industrial company, a small craft business or an ambitious do-it-yourselfer, it makes no difference to us. In our BAER online shop we have a wide selection of hand tap sets. Our product range also has the right tool for your project. The satisfaction of our customers is always our top priority at BAER. So do not hesitate to contact us with your questions and requests. We will be happy to advise you with the concentrated expertise of 40 years of company history.
Even for very special requirements and special sets of hand taps, we are a strong partner at your side. The standardised sizes do not have the right diameter for you or you are working with unusual designs? Contact us and let us talk about your wishes! We will be happy to implement special designs that are precisely tailored to your needs. Simply use our contact form!
Hand taps for use without a machine
If you want to insert a internal thread into solid materials such as metal, steel, stainless steel or plastic, you are first faced with the question: by hand or by machine? Machine taps are mostly used in industrial environments where a very high number of threads have to be drilled in a short time. For use in the trade or at home, however, the hand tap set is usually sufficient.
Whatever you choose, always be sure to have the right tool available exactly for your project. Hand taps are specially designed for manual use. For a clean and precise result, you should therefore only work with these special taps when tapping by hand.
In the machine sector, short machine taps are usually used instead of hand taps. These only require a single operation for the entire thread, but also require more force to operate. Therefore, a different technique is common for manual tapping. Instead of just one tool, three taps are used in a hand threading set that build on each other. In this way, you need a lower torque for each working pass. This not only makes the work easier, it also reduces the forces acting on the screw tap. In this way, you can significantly reduce the risk of damage to your working tool.
A hand tap set usually consists of three parts. The three screw tap are called taper tap (No. 1), intermediate Tap (No. 2) and finishing tap (No. 3). This actually makes it clear which tap is used when. So that you can tell the screw tap apart at first glance, they have markings in the form of rings: one ring for the taper tap (No. 1), two rings for the intermediate Tap (No. 2) and the drill without a ring is the finishing tap (No. 3). In addition, the tools differ in the lead length, the thread flank diameter and the thread outer diameter. For fine threads, i.e. threads with a fine pitch, the hand taps sets consist of two parts, the pilot and finishing tap (No. 3). Each drill also has a square shank by means of which it can be clamped in a holding tool. You will find suitable operating tools and other tools accessories in our shop!
And this is how it works - tapping with the hand taps from BAER
With a hand tap set from BAER you have all the taps you need for a clean and precisely formed internal thread. Before you can get started, however, you must first pre-drill your target. To do this, it is best to also use a drill from the BAER twist drill bit set that is suitable for the material you are using. Attention, the right diameter is important! It must of course be smaller than the desired dimension of the thread. You can calculate the exact value of the core hole dimension (for most types of thread) by subtracting the thread pitch from nominal diameter. But don't worry, for all standard sizes you will find tables from which you can easily read off the appropriate value for your project. We have linked all the relevant lists for you on our product pages.
Once the pilot hole has been drilled, you can optionally countersink the core hole with a taper countersink. This makes it easier for you to centre the tap and helps you to drill an accurate hole. If you have cutting oil to hand, you can use it to reduce frictional resistance. In principle, hand taps can also be used without lubricant, but we still recommend using some. And now your first drill comes into play, the taper tap (No. 1). Turn it slowly in and out of the drill hole with a steady hand. Repeat this process with the intermediate Tap (No. 2) and finally with the finishing tap (No. 3). Depending on the material, you should make sure that you drill the hand tap through the core hole in a fluid motion and do not keep turning it back and forth. Only with long-chipping materials is this technique necessary to break the chips.
Our wide range of hand taps leaves nothing to be desired
You have the need, we have the solution. In our BAER online shop you will find a wide range of hand tap sets in all common DIN sizes for every conceivable application. Our hand taps- sets are suitable for a wide range of materials, including general structural steels, free-cutting steels or case-hardening steels. Our hand taps also drill into unalloyed heat-treatable steels, pure copper or bronze without any problems. In addition, we also stock drills specifically for use in stainless steels such as rust and acid-resistant steels, alloyed and unalloyed heat-treatable steels and pure titanium. You will also find a suitable hand tap set for high-strength materials or those with special pitches. Do you need a drill for a left-hand thread? Thanks to our wide range of products, you will also find what you are looking for without difficulty. Our range also includes countless helpful accessories such as tap wrenches, countersinks or twist drill bit for pre-drilling the core hole.
You can purchase our hand taps either as a complete set with all three drills required for your perfect internal thread. You also have the option of ordering taper tap (No. 1), intermediate Tap (No. 2) and finishing tap (No. 3) individually. This means you do not have to buy a complete set of hand taps if you are only missing one tap.
By the way, if you are just starting out in tapping with hand taps and are overwhelmed by the sheer endless selection - no problem at all. Contact us by phone, by e-mail or via the contact form on our website. At BAER you will always find a sympathetic ear for your project and competent advice that is aimed precisely at your needs. We look forward to meet you!
