MF – Metric Fine Thread
A fine thread is always required when fine dimensions offer an advantage. This can be the case with set screws, where precise adjustments need to be made using adjustment screws, such as on measuring devices. Due to the reduced thread depth compared to standard threads, the metric ISO fine thread is also well-suited for thin-walled components. Thanks to its good self-locking properties, it is also frequently used in vibration-intensive environments.
Everything You Need to Know About Metric ISO Fine Thread According to DIN 13-2 to 13–11
The thread profile of the ISO fine thread resembles that of the standard thread with a flank angle of 60°, but the difference lies in the smaller pitch. DIN 13 contains several tables with different dimensions for various applications.
In principle, the fine thread can be used wherever a small pitch, low thread depth, and good self-locking are needed. However, the fine thread is more sensitive to dirt and damage. For this reason, the more robust standard thread is still preferred for normal screw connections without special requirements.
According to the DIN standard, the designation of the metric fine thread consists of the abbreviation, the outside diameter, and the pitch, e.g., M 20 × 0.35. Occasionally, the abbreviation MF is also used to distinguish it from the standard thread.
Metric Fine Thread – Our Product Range
In our product range, you will find a wide selection of tools and accessories for the metric ISO fine thread. Detailed information from the item number to the application areas can be found on each product page.
Thread Cutting Sets for Metric ISO Fine Thread
Our thread cutting sets for the metric ISO fine thread are always a good choice if you are looking for a comprehensive basic set. All the necessary tools in one box for organized storage and safe transport. Choose between two variants:
- The set with taper thread taps includes not only the matching dies but also twist drills for the perfect core hole. Suitable for threads in sizes M 5 × 0.5 to M 12 × 1.5.
- The set with hand taps also includes the appropriate dies and all necessary holding tools – the all-in-one package for manual use. Available in three sizes of varying scope.
Thread Taps for Metric ISO Fine Thread
Of course, you can also purchase thread taps for metric fine threads individually. All our thread taps are made from high-quality base materials and crafted with the utmost precision. They are available in many different designs. You are sure to find the right tool for creating perfect threads – for every material and every core hole shape. Choose between taper thread taps, hand taps, and machine taps.
Taper thread taps can create the thread in a single pass and can be operated by hand or machine. Practical if you want to stay flexible!
Hand taps are available in our shop for standard applications for right- and left-hand threads and also in HSSE for higher stress. To achieve high-quality results without a machine, cut the fine threads in two steps using specialized tools. These can be purchased individually or as matching two-piece sets.
We offer a particularly large selection in the area of machine taps. Choose from many different flute and lead-in geometries and find the right tool for the material you are working with. Machine nut taps are also part of our range.
Thread Formers for Metric ISO Fine Thread
If you prefer forming threads instead of cutting them, we also have the right tool in our range. Thread formers displace the material instead of removing it. This creates a particularly high-quality surface and eliminates chip issues. We offer thread formers in tolerance classes 6HX and 6GX (oversize).
Dies for Metric ISO Fine Thread
We also have the right tools in stock for external threads. With our dies, you can create threads on screws and bolts in no time. In addition to the standard round dies, you can also purchase hex dies from us.
You will find round dies in various designs. We offer standard versions for right- or left-hand threads, as well as dies with lead chamfers or special versions for stainless steel or undersize for tolerance 6e – in case you need room for additional surface treatments. All round dies can be used by hand with a die holder or by machine with the appropriate mount.
The special feature of hex dies for metric ISO fine thread is their shape. These dies can also be used with a standard open-end wrench. They are especially suitable for quickly reworking a dirty or damaged thread. They can also be used in hard-to-reach places.
Thread Gauges for Metric ISO Fine Thread
With fine threads, precision is particularly important. To check your threads for gauge compliance and determine whether your thread tools are still functioning properly, we offer thread gauges for metric ISO fine thread. Use ring gauges and plug gauges to quickly and reliably inspect external and internal threads. If necessary, we are happy to calibrate the gauges for you.
