Fine Thread – Precise, Shallow, Self-Locking
A fine thread is required whenever precise dimensions offer an advantage. This applies, for example, to set screws when fine adjustments need to be made using adjusting screws, such as on measuring devices. Due to its shallower thread depth compared to a standard thread, the ISO metric fine thread is also well suited for use in thin-walled components. Thanks to its excellent self-locking properties, it is also frequently used in environments with heavy vibrations.
Everything You Need to Know About ISO Metric Fine Threads According to DIN 13-2 to 13–11
The thread profile of the ISO fine thread resembles that of the standard thread with a flank angle of 60°, but differs due to its smaller pitch. DIN 13 includes several tables with different dimensions for various applications.
In general, fine threads can be used wherever a small pitch, shallow thread depth, and excellent self-locking are required. However, fine threads are more sensitive to dirt and damage. For standard screw connections without special requirements, the more robust standard thread is still preferred.
The designation of the metric fine thread, according to the DIN standard, consists of the prefix, the outer diameter, and the pitch, e.g., M 20 × 0.35. Occasionally, the prefix MF is used to distinguish it from standard threads.
Metric Fine Thread – Our Product Range
Our product range includes a wide selection of tools and accessories for the ISO metric fine thread. Detailed information, from the article number to application details, can be found on each product page.
Thread Cutting Sets for ISO Metric Fine Threads
Our thread cutting sets for ISO metric fine threads are always a good choice if you are looking for a comprehensive basic kit. All necessary tools in one box for organized storage and safe transport. Choose between two variants:
- The set with thread cutting taps includes suitable dies and spiral drills for perfect core holes. Suitable for thread sizes M 5 × 0.5 to M 12 × 1.5.
- The set with hand taps additionally includes matching dies and all required holders – the all-in-one package for manual use. Available in three different size options.
Thread Taps for ISO Metric Fine Threads
Of course, you can also purchase individual thread taps for metric fine threads. All our thread taps are made from high-quality base material and manufactured with the utmost care. They are available in many different designs so you’re sure to find the perfect tool for your material and core hole shape. Choose from single-cut taps, hand taps, and machine taps.
Single-Cut Taps
Single-cut taps can produce the thread in a single pass and can be used either manually or with a machine. Convenient for maximum flexibility!
Hand Taps
Our shop offers hand taps for standard applications, including right- and left-hand threads, as well as HSSE versions for higher loads. To achieve high-quality results without machines, fine threads are cut in two steps using specialized tools. These are available individually or in matching two-piece sets.
Machine Taps
You’ll find a particularly wide selection of machine taps in our range. Choose from a variety of flute and lead geometries and find the right tool for the material you're working with. We also offer machine nut taps.
Thread Formers for ISO Metric Fine Threads
If you prefer forming instead of cutting threads, we also offer the right tool. Thread formers displace the material instead of cutting it, resulting in an especially smooth surface and eliminating chip-related issues. Our thread formers are available in tolerance classes 6HX and 6GX (oversized).
Dies for ISO Metric Fine Threads
We also stock the right tools for external threads. Our dies allow you to produce threads on bolts and screws in no time. In addition to standard round dies, we also offer hexagonal dies.
Round Dies
We offer standard versions for right- or left-hand threads, as well as dies with chamfered leads and special versions for stainless steel or undersized threads to tolerance 6e – ideal if you require room for additional surface treatments. All round dies can be used manually with a die holder or on machines with the right mount.
Hexagonal Dies
Hexagonal dies for ISO metric fine threads are unique in shape and can be used with a regular open-end wrench. They’re especially useful for quick repairs of contaminated or damaged threads and ideal for use in hard-to-reach places.
Thread Gauges for ISO Metric Fine Threads
Precision is especially important for fine threads. To check thread conformity and verify that your tools still function perfectly, we offer thread gauges for ISO metric fine threads. Use ring and plug gauges to reliably inspect external and internal threads. We’re also happy to calibrate your gauges upon request.
