Die stock made of steel or premium die-cast
Screws and threaded rods are available in many versions in DIY stores. This might give some craftsmen the idea that making external threads themselves with dies and die stocks is a waste of time. But far from it! Because there are many reasons why it can be necessary or even more convenient to cut an external thread yourself. For one thing, if the internal thread has unusual dimensions, you can quickly make the right counterpart yourself without spending hours in the shop looking for the right screw. And for unconventionally shaped workpieces or special needs, you may not find what you are looking for in the standard selection. If you are able to cut your own external threads with a die and die stock, then you are simply more flexible and can easily adapt screws, rods and bars - or other components such as tubes - exactly to your needs.
These are the obvious reasons. But let's be honest: as a craftsman, don't you also have the ambition to do everything yourself from scratch? What could be better than admiring a finished project in the knowledge that you have managed completely without prefabricated components? Especially as it is really not a big hurdle to cut an external thread by hand. As always, all you need is a little skill and, of course, high-quality tools. In addition to the right thread cutting die, a die stock is indispensable. This is available for manual use or as die stock for drill screwdrivers - and then you can get started!
This is how a threading die stock is constructed
The die stock is a very specialised holding or Operating tool designed for holding and manually using a die. It consists essentially of two components: the body and the handles.
The body is the heart of the tool. It has a round opening into which the round die can be inserted. This is secured in the die stock by means of five fastening screws that can be tightened with a slotted screwdriver. The screws engage in holes in the die and thus hold it firmly in place in the die stock. This keeps it secure and prevents it from turning while you are cutting the thread.
The two handles are on the left and right of the body. They allow comfortable handling and optimum distribution of force. This makes manual cutting of external threads effortless, even without the use of machines.
Die stock in use
Once you get the hang of it, you will soon be cutting precise external threads by hand with ease. There are only a few steps on the way to the perfect thread:
- Before you can start, you first have to prepare the bolt. Clamp it in a vice and chamfer the end. This means that you file off the edges all around at a 45 degree angle. This not only makes it easier to place the cutting tool in the die stock, but also to screw it into the receiving internal thread later on.
- The bolt is ready to go? Then next prepare your die stock next. If the die is suitable for use with a die guide you can insert it now. The guide will help you to cut the thread perpendicularly. Then the die goes into the die stock and is securely fixed with the retaining screws so that it cannot twist.
- Cutting oil facilitates the cutting process. Put a drop on the bolt and/or on the die in the die stock.
- Now all you have to do is put the die stock on the bolt and turn it until you have reached the desired length of your thread. Then turn the die stock back out in the opposite direction.
- Does everything fit? The easiest way to check this is to screw a nut onto the freshly cut thread. If it can be moved over the entire length of the thread without any problems, then everything has worked and your external thread is ready! If you want it to be very precise, you can also check the thread with appropriate thread-gauge rings. The thread-gauge ring should be able to be screwed completely onto the thread. The thread-out ring gauge should be able to be screwed on by a maximum of 2 turns.
Die stock in the BAER Online-Shop
At BAER we want you to leave your workshop with an all-round positive feeling. That's why we offer you a comprehensive range of tools, with products of reliable, consistent quality, as if from a single mould. You could say as if from one zinc die casting. Because that is the modern process in which we manufacture our stable, accurately fitting and resilient die stock are manufactured. Despite the large stability, the raw material is light and easy to handle, and completely recyclable. The perfect raw material for die stock, which you can enjoy for a long time. And for the hard lumps, we also have our steel die stock in our range.
BAER threading die stocks are of course standardised according to DIN and have five fastening screws for a particularly firm hold. One die stock is suitable for holding dies in various DIN sizes. When making your selection, make sure you choose the right tool for your intended thread size.
In addition, the special design of our die stock enables the use of die guides. This makes it even easier to cut a perfect external thread. Just make sure that the bore of the die and the guide overlap in order not to hinder a problem-free chip removal.
And after successful use, the BAER die stock can be stowed away in a space-saving way thanks to the removable handles and stored for the next use. So you always have a die stock handy the next time you want to cut an external thread.
