Tool holder with ratchet for screw tap operation
The beauty of thread cutting is that you can easily do it by hand at home with a tool holder with ratchet. Without any heavy equipment or extensive tools! Thanks to the tool holder with ratchet, this craft activity is open to everyone, from absolute beginners to experienced professionals. All you need for hand tapping thread cutting is a set of hand taps and an operating tool in which you can clamp the taps. Tap wrenches are widely used to do the job. But there are other options for getting your hand taps to work.
A ratchet tool holder is an operating tool that makes a great tool holder for screw taps. And compared to a tap wrench, the tool holder with ratchet comes with a few distinct advantages. So if you occasionally cut threads by hand and are looking for a tool holder for screw taps to make your work easier, then take a look at the tool holders with ratchet in the BAER online shop!
What is a tool holder with ratchet?
An operating tool such as a tool holder with ratchet is characterised above all by the fact that you do not have to use it again and again. A ratchet for screw taps has a special mechanism that ensures that force is only transmitted in one direction of rotation. If, on the other hand, you turn the tool holder with ratchet in the opposite direction, it will turn empty. Instead, a creaking noise can be heard, which is the reason for the name of the tool holder with ratchet.
It is important that the tool holder with ratchet works in both directions. Otherwise you would not be able to unscrew the screw tap from the hole after you have cut the thread. To achieve this, the tool holder with ratchet can be switched between right-handed and left-handed operation. You switch between the two modes via a small switch and thus decide in which direction the toolholder with ratchet engages and in which direction it is in neutral.
When is a tool holder with ratchet used?
A tool holder with ratchet has a decisive advantage over the tap wrench when it comes to space requirements. The tap wrench has two long handles by which it can be moved. This reduces the amount of force you have to apply when using it. However, this design has the disadvantage that in narrow places there is often not enough space to turn the operating tool freely. The handles then bump against components and you have to keep repositioning the tap wrench to finish cutting your thread. With a hand tap set with three taps that you have to use one after the other, this quickly adds up to a lot of time.
With the ratchet, on the other hand, you never have to stop. If the handle hits an obstacle, you simply turn the tool holder with ratchet back again and start the turning movement again. In doing so, you only have to cover so much distance with a tool holder with ratchet until the locking blade grips again. In this way, you can also work in very tight places.
This special feature of the tool holder with ratchet does not only save time in narrow places. Even in situations where you can freely turn a tap wrench, you still have to reach around after half a turn unless you have extremely flexible wrists. The tool holder with ratchet, on the other hand, completely eliminates the need to reach around. You work in one continuous movement and thus also avoid the danger of misaligning the screw tap or damaging the thread when reaching around and attaching it. The tool holder with ratchet makes thread cutting not only faster and more flexible, but also easier!
How it works - the tool holder with ratchet in use
The tool holder with ratchet follows a simple but extremely effective structure. In the lower section you will find a square drive, which you can open and close by turning it. In this way, screw taps of different sizes can easily be used in the same tool holder with ratchet. Turn the holder closed to clamp the screw tap firmly in place. And now you can get started! Make sure that the tool holder with ratchet is switched to clockwise rotation for screwing in the tap. Now turn the hand tap into the prepared core hole and use the special advantages of the tool holder with ratchet by moving the tool back and forward. Once the thread has been cut, switch the tool holder with ratchet to counterclockwise rotation. Now you can remove the screw tap from the thread in the same way.
By the way: The handle on the tool holder with ratchet can be locked in different positions. This makes you even more flexible when it comes to narrow spaces and hard-to-reach work areas. If the handle is in the way, simply move it one position further and you can easily turn the tool holder with ratchet again.
