Camera and C-Mount Thread
Photography is one of the areas in which imperial threads are commonly used in Europe. They are especially found on tripods and lenses, where standardized designs ensure safety when using often expensive equipment. Even though modern cameras typically use quick-release bayonet mounts, the classic lens thread is far from obsolete. The tripod thread also remains widely used. You’ll find all the tools you need to work with these threads in the BAER online shop.
Everything you need to know about the photo and C-Mount thread
When we speak of camera threads, we’re not referring to a single thread type but to several that have become standard across various camera models.
This includes the tripod thread, which comes in two sizes of American UNC threads: 1/4″–20 UNC and 3/8″–16 UNC. These are imperial threads with a 60° flank angle, outer diameters of 1/4 and 3/8 inch, and thread counts of 20 and 16 TPI, respectively. These threads ensure a secure connection between tripod and head, or between camera and mounting plate. A tight fit is crucial—not only for image stability but also to avoid damage to costly equipment. That’s why the robust UNC thread is favored here.
Lens threads include C-/CS-mount and S-mount types. C-mount lenses were once the standard in photography and film. This thread has a 1″ (2.54 cm) outer diameter and is imperial. S-mount is a metric thread (M 12 × 0.5) used for miniature or board lenses. Both are designed to securely mount interchangeable lenses to the camera body.
Camera threads – Our product range
Precision is key in photography, and adventurous photographers may occasionally need to rethread or repair dirty or damaged threads. BAER offers the right tools for the job—whether you're working on internal or external threads.
Taps – individually or in sets
We stock high-quality HSSG taps for 1/4″ and 3/8″ tripod threads. These tools are designed specifically for camera and tripod threads and ensure flawless results. All taps in this category are single-cut taps, allowing flexible use—whether by hand or with a machine.
For lens threads, we offer tailored tools as well. Whether C-mount or S-mount, our HSSG taps let you handle your project with ease. The C-mount tap is single-cut, while the finer S-mount thread should be tapped manually. These are available individually or in practical sets with pre-cut and finish taps.
Dies for tripods and lenses
You can also rethread or cut external threads in the photography sector using BAER dies. We offer dies for 1/4″ and 3/8″ tripod threads, as well as for C- and S-mount lens threads. All tools are made from high-quality HSS for maximum precision and durability.
