Step drills
They look unusual, are true experts in their field and yet surprisingly versatile: step drills may not be part of the basic equipment in every toolbox, but thanks to their special properties they have become indispensable in certain applications. Due to their shape, step drills are sometimes also referred to as cone drills. These tools are mainly used when machining sheet metal and workpieces with low thickness. In the BAER online shop, you will find a wide selection of high-quality tools.
Everything you need to know when drilling metal with a step drill
A step drill is particularly suitable for drilling holes in thin workpieces. Thanks to the special design of the tool, holes with large diameters are also possible. These two factors make this type of drill especially common in electrical installation work.
In principle, step drills can be used in many areas where holes need to be drilled in sheet metal and other thin components. This includes sanitary engineering, heating technology and the automotive industry. For some general applications in mechanical engineering, the step drill is also the first choice.
Step drills can be used both in stationary drilling machines and in handheld tools. However, some practice is beneficial for freehand use. First, you need to select the correct step drill and the appropriate step for your application. To do this, you must know the diameter you require. Then locate this value on the marking of your step drill. This indicates the step up to which you need to drill. Now clamp the step drill into the chuck of your drilling machine. Generously apply a suitable lubricant to the tool. Position the tip and begin drilling.
Between the individual steps of a step drill there is a transition with a 90° angle, known as the step angle. This area is ideal for deburring the freshly drilled hole. For deburring, always use the next higher step above the one used to drill the hole.
The material and surface of the step drill used should always be matched to the material you are working on. Different properties are required for light metals than for steel or plastics. Stainless steel can be machined more easily with a special coating.
