Do you also prefer to repair a defective BSP-thread instead of disposing of it? Then you're in good company. After all, repairing instead of throwing away has a lot of advantages - provided you know what you are doing and have the right tools. If this is the case, you can save a lot of money and time and you are also doing the environment a favour.
Defective BSP-threads can also be easily repaired. The easiest way to do this is with wire thread inserts. You can use these if your "BSP" thread is torn out, rusted or dirty. Or you can insert the wire thread insert into the thread directly after thread production to prevent damage from the outset. In this way, you also increase the pull-out strength of your thread, which gives you more leeway with the materials used. To carry out this type of reinforcement correctly, you not only need suitable thread inserts, but also a screw tap with oversize. We will explain why below.
This is where the BSP-thread comes into play
The BSP-thread is also known as parallel Whitworth pipe thread or BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel). In Germany, it is the most common pipe thread and standardised according to DIN ISO 228. It is particularly important to note the thread angle of 55°, which distinguishes the BSP thread from the other thread types that you usually come into contact with in this country. The metric standard thread and also many imperial thread standards have a thread angle of 60°. If you are working with the BSP thread, it is therefore very important to use the right screw tap. The BSP thread is also a cylindrical pipe thread and does not seal in the thread. You therefore always need additional sealant for pipe connections with this thread.
The BSP thread is mainly used in the sanitary sector, but also in heating and air conditioning technology and in other areas where pipes play a role. It is often used for fittings that connect different parts of the pipes together. This means that the BSP-thread not only has a major task to fulfil, it is also exposed to high loads. Dirt and damage are not uncommon here. Fortunately, there are ways and means of repairing the BSP-thread without having to replace the entire pipe.
You can easily reinforce or replace BSP-threads with wire inserts
Wire thread inserts are a simple and inexpensive way of making a BSP-thread more resistant or repairing it after it has already been damaged. These inserts are wire spirals with a diamond-shaped cross-section. They are screwed into a mounting thread, adapting perfectly to the existing threads and reinforcing them. There, the insert distributes the forces acting on the individual threads of the BSP-thread better and increases the shear surface. This not only renews the thread, but also makes it more resilient than before. Thanks to the high-quality material, the wire insert also protects the BSP-thread from further wear and corrosion and Significantly increases the service life of components.
Repairing a BSP-thread with wire thread inserts is quick and uncomplicated. All you have to do is drill out the damaged thread or pre-drill a core hole if you want to cut a new thread. Then cut the BSP-thread with a screw tap and screw in the thread insert. Break the tang required for screwing in and you're done - your BSP-thread is now stronger than ever before.
You need this screw tap to repair a thread (BSP)
You need the right tool to make the repair a success. This is where we come to the BAER short machine taps with oversize for the BSP-thread. You need these to pre-cut the mounting thread for the thread insert. This type of thread is also known as an insert thread, abbreviated to STI. Why do you need a separate type of thread for this purpose? This is because the wire insert has to fit into the thread. At the same time, you don't want the repaired thread to end up being a different size than it was before. That's why you need a screw tap that will bring your thread to a size that offers space for the wire insert. The thread designation then consists of the designation for the desired end result with the suffix STI to indicate that it is an oversize. Let's assume you want to reinforce a BSP1 thread. The designation for the matching screw tap is then "BSP 1 x 11 STI". Similarly for the BSP1/2 thread "BSP 1/2 x 14 STI", for the BSP2 thread "BSP 2 x 11 STI" and so on.
