BA – British Association Thread
The BA thread is characterized by small dimensions and is mainly used in fields requiring miniature screws. These include precision mechanics, watch and jewelry manufacturing, and model building. The BA thread was already developed in the 1880s and is now part of the British Standards, defined in standard BS 93. While primarily used in the UK, many model builders are familiar with it internationally.
Everything you need to know about the British Association Standard Thread
Although the BA thread originates from the UK, it is not an imperial thread but a metric one. That means the pitch is given in millimeters rather than threads per inch, which one might expect from a British thread type. The flank angle is 47.5°.
Its designation also deviates from the norm – it includes neither pitch nor diameter, but rather a reverse numbering system. BA 0, with a 6 mm outside diameter, is the largest, and BA 25, with 0.25 mm, is the smallest.
BA threads are now considered obsolete for new designs and are typically replaced not by other British thread types, but by small metric coarse or fine threads.
BA Thread – Our Product Range
Even if it’s used less frequently today, the BA thread remains important for hobbyists and model builders. That’s why we at BAER continue to offer all necessary tools for working with the BA thread.
BA Hand Taps
Due to their small size and sensitive use cases, BA threads are ideal for manual cutting. Our hand taps make this easy. Combined with matching tap wrenches, they can be used at your desk or in your workshop without the need for heavy equipment.
Thread cutting by hand requires three tools used in sequence: taper, intermediate, and finishing tap. This distributes the cutting force, protects the taps, and improves results.
We offer all three in convenient sets, but you can also buy them individually. Premium HSS and reinforced shanks ensure extra stability – especially important with such small dimensions.
BA Dies
With BAER tools, you can also cut external BA threads. Our sturdy dies made from high-grade HSS support your work perfectly. With a die holder, you can cut threads manually, or use them with a suitable machine holder for mechanical operation.
