If you need a thread, you typically proceed as follows: As a rule, a pilot hole is first drilled using a centre drill ( through hole or blind hole), into which the thread is then cut using a tap. However, if you work with a precision threading tool ( machine screw tap), you can complete both operations with the same tool. This saves you the time required for tool changeover.

In addition, some machine taps feature a practical chip-breaking groove, which ensures that the chips produced during the thread-cutting process are broken up and pushed downwards out of the through hole. For a blind hole, a machine screw tap with a twisted groove serves the same purpose by pushing the chips upwards out of the hole against the cutting direction.

Short machine taps have been popular since the 1970s as an economical internal thread cutter for short through-holes. It could also re-cut the thread and therefore replaced, for interested customers, the three-piece combination of pre-cutter, centre cutter and finish cutter that was typical at the time. Our short machine taps have a full thread profile and can therefore be operated both manually and by machine!

Hand screw tap are the traditional tools used for cutting a thread. For standard threads, three-piece hand tap sets with a pilot tap, intermediate tap and finishing tap are used. For fine threads, two-piece hand screw tap are used. In the comparison, alongside the machine screw tap in a long version, the hand screw tap are available in a short version.
