Mini taps for mini and nano threads (< 2 mm)
Every craftsman should have a good eye and steady hands. This is especially true whenever very small dimensions are involved. If you have ever used a tap ≤2 mm, you know exactly what this means. On a microscopic scale, even the slightest wobble can have serious consequences. Surprisingly, there are many areas in which 2 mm screws and even much smaller dimensions are used. In the BAER online shop, you will find the right mini taps for these sizes. Take a look!
Everything you need to know about mini and nano threads
Model making and the watchmaking industry are classic fields of application when it comes to using taps ≤2 mm. But many other industries would also struggle without mini taps. Whether in apparatus engineering or precision mechanics, everything is simply getting smaller and smaller. And where screws shrink, taps with a diameter of 2 mm or less are required. In microelectronics, every millimeter counts for smartphones, smartwatches and similar devices. Medical technology also requires extremely small components and relies on mini taps to secure implants and bone screws.
The geometry of taps with a diameter of 2 mm or less is optimized for their size to achieve maximum stability. Threads of this size are standardized according to two different standards. DIN 14-2 covers mini taps with diameters below 1 mm. Everything above that, up to taps ≤2 mm, follows DIN 13 for the metric ISO coarse thread. In fact, the range of mini taps extends up to a nominal diameter of 2.6 mm – up to this point, a thread is considered a mini thread.
Taps with a diameter of 2 mm or smaller require special care during use. Even “full-size” taps can easily break if used incorrectly. The tiny taps with diameters ≤2 mm are even less able to withstand mechanical stress. As a first measure to prevent tool breakage, it is advisable to purchase taps with a diameter of 2 mm or less only from trusted manufacturers. High-quality tools made of robust material break less often – this also applies on a micro scale.
In addition, you should never forget to use sufficient lubricant. Handle your mini tap with particular care. Avoid contamination and have the tool reground in good time if necessary. Then thread cutting will also work reliably in the micro range.
Mini taps for mini and nano threads – Our range
Are you looking for a model-making tap, want to take up watch repair as a new hobby, or tinker with old electronic devices? At BAER you will find what you need. In our online shop, we offer mini taps starting from size M 0.3 x 0.08. These mini taps under 1 mm are supplied in sets of 10. The tools standardized according to DIN 14-2 are so delicate that purchasing them individually is not worthwhile. More robust sizes above 1 mm are available both in packs of 10 and individually.
BAER taps with a diameter of 2 mm or less are made of high-quality high-speed steel and manufactured with absolute precision. This gives them all the prerequisites to serve you well for a long time as model-making or watchmaker’s taps and to support you optimally in your work.
