UNEF – American Extra-Fine Thread
UNEF is an inch-based fine thread with an especially small pitch. Among the trio of UNC coarse thread and the fine threads UNF and UNEF, it has the most threads per inch. This allows for particularly high precision in instruments, electronic components, and other applications in precision mechanics. Since the small pitch goes hand in hand with shallow thread depth, it is also a great space-saving option for thin-walled components. In high-safety industries such as aerospace, its excellent self-locking properties reliably prevent screws from loosening on their own.
Everything You Need to Know About the UNEF Thread
UNEF is, alongside UNC and UNF, one of the three standard thread types of the Unified Thread Standard (UTS) and is commonly used in the USA on screws, nuts, and other fastening elements. It is an inch-based thread; the pitch is usually specified in threads per inch (TPI). The flank angle is 60°. All dimensions are defined in ANSI/ASME B1.1.
The designation for UNEF threads consists of the outer diameter, TPI, and abbreviation – for example, 1/4″ – 32 UNEF. Like all UTS thread types, UNEF sizes below 1/4″ are labeled with a number. In this case, it only applies to the thread with an outer diameter of 0.216 inches (5.486 mm), which carries the number 12.
Because of its fine pitch, UNEF is susceptible to contamination and mechanical damage. The strength of a screw connection may also be affected. Where a coarser pitch can be used instead, it is advisable to use UNF or UNC to ensure a long-lasting, stable connection. However, UNEF is unbeatable wherever precision is the top priority.
UNEF Threads – Our Product Range
In our BAER online shop, you will find a wide selection of tools for creating, reworking, and inspecting UNEF threads. In addition to taps and dies, we also offer thread gauges.
UNEF Taps
Our range includes tools for manual and machine thread cutting. Our UNEF hand taps are ideal if you only occasionally work with threads or need to stay flexible during use. To produce fine threads manually, two taps are required to gradually achieve a perfect result: a pre-tap and a finishing tap. You’ll find both tools in a practical two-piece set. Of course, you can also purchase pre- and finishing taps individually in any size if you need to replace or add one to your toolkit.
If you prefer machine support, we offer a wide range of UNEF machine taps in Form C, suitable for both blind holes and through holes. Our machine taps are made from ground high-speed steel HSSG to ensure high precision and long tool life. The reinforced shank provides extra stability during use.
UNEF Dies
Of course, you can also use BAER tools to create UNEF external threads. Our high-quality round dies made of HSS high-speed steel offer ideal support. Whether you use a die holder by hand or a machine with a matching adapter – our UNEF dies always deliver top results.
UNEF Thread Gauges
Occasionally, it may be necessary to check a thread for gauge conformity. This lets you determine whether the tap or die used is still functioning properly or has worn out and needs resharpening or replacement. To carry out this check easily and reliably, you need thread gauges. Our product range includes thread ring gauges and thread plug gauges for UNEF threads. Simply screwing them on or in lets you quickly inspect your threads. We’ll gladly calibrate the thread gauges for you!
