BaerCoil Wire Thread Inserts and BaerFix Self-Tapping Thread Inserts: Here Are the Differences

In the BAER online shop, we offer a wide range of thread inserts and accessories that you can use for thread repair and for reinforcing a threaded connection. The two product lines BaerCoil and BaerFix share many similarities but also have clear differences. Let’s take a closer look:

Design

BaerFix thread inserts can be easily distinguished from BaerCoil wire thread inserts at first glance based on their design. It is already in the name: inserts from the BaerCoil system consist of a spiral-shaped piece of wire made from different materials such as stainless steelbronzeInconel, or other materials, depending on the application. The wire spiral is flexible, can adapt to the thread flanks, and can even compensate for pitch errors.

In contrast, the solid BaerFix thread inserts come in the form of a fixed sleeve. This is necessary because they are self-tapping thread inserts. The sleeve includes cutting slots or cutting holes that cut the thread into the material during installation. This saves time and produces a screw connection with very little play.

Application Area

Both variants are suitable for reinforcing threads, improving corrosion resistance, and increasing pull-out strength, especially in materials with low shear strength. The inserts can be installed preventively during initial machining of the component. However, both models are also suitable for thread repair, meaning they can be installed afterwards to fix damaged threads.

For particularly durable threads that should not fail under high loads and vibrations, BaerFix inserts offer a special advantage. Because they create their own receiving thread, the connection features very tight tolerances and almost no play. Installation is also fast because no pre-cutting of the thread is required. This can be a decisive factor in industrial and series production.

BaerFix thread insert application

BaerCoil wire thread inserts are bendable and flexible. Especially in thread repair, they are ideal for compensating small defects and irregularities. Depending on the type, they can also be used for screw locking.

Installation

Installation is similar for both variants. In both cases, you can perform the installation manually or by machine using a special installation tool to screw the insert into the thread.

The main difference lies in the preparation process. While you must drill a core hole for both variants, only BaerCoil wire thread inserts require you to pre-cut the thread. BaerFix inserts form their own receiving thread.

BaerCoil wire thread inserts also include a tang (except for the NoTang type), which must be broken off and removed from the thread after successful installation.
