FAQ

Twist drill

Twist drills are versatile tools for drilling holes in various materials. Their spiral geometry facilitates cutting and the removal of chips via the twisted flutes. They are distinguished by the following features:

1. Tool types

2. Cutting edge geometry

  • Point angle: Varies depending on the material (e.g. 118° for soft materials, 135° for hard materials).
  • Tip grinding: Adapted to the material for clean tapping and optimum cutting performance.

3. Bevel shapes

  • Cross bevel: Reduces feed force, ideal for metal.
  • Flat bevel: For soft materials such as wood.
  • Special shapes: For special applications, e.g. stone.

4. Drill bit materials

  • HSS (high speed steel): Standard material for general applications.
  • HSSE (cobalt alloy): For harder materials such as stainless steel.
  • Carbide: For extremely hard materials such as concrete or glass.

5. Coatings

  • TiN (titanium nitride): Increases wear resistance.
  • TiAlN (titanium aluminum nitride): Suitable for high temperatures.
  • TiCN (titanium carbon nitride): Increases mechanical load capacity.

6. Drill holder

  • Cylindrical shank: Standard holder for hand drills.
  • SDS holder: For impact drills and hammer tools.
  • Cone holder: For industrial machines with high precision.

Twist drills are optimized according to material and application so that they can work precisely and efficiently, even under demanding conditions.

The different drill bit types differ as follows:

HSSE Power drill bits:

  • Made from cobalt alloy
  • Higher performance and heat resistance
  • Ideal for metals, particularly hard and tough materials
  • Longer service life than standard HSS drill bits

Masonry and concrete drill bits:

  • Special carbide tip for hard materials
  • Suitable for masonry, stone and concrete
  • Function like a wedge-shaped chisel in impact drills
  • Different versions for different degrees of hardness

SDS-Plus hammer drill bit:

  • Specially designed for impact drills and hammer drills
  • Universal SDS-Plus holder for quick tool change
  • Four-edged carbide plate for high performance in hard materials
  • Centering tip for precise drilling
  • Milled double helix for efficient drill dust removal

These drill bit types are optimized for different materials and applications to ensure maximum efficiency and service life.

HSSE power drills should be used instead of HSS drills in the following situations:

  • Harder materials: Ideal for stainless steel, high-strength alloys and heat-resistant steels.
  • Higher temperatures: HSSE drill bits retain their hardness at temperatures up to 600°C.
  • Longer tool life: They offer a better tool life than standard HSS drill bits.
  • Precision work: Enable more precise drilling without pre-drilling.
  • High loads: Suitable for industrial applications and intensive use.
  • Versatility: Can be used for various materials such as steel, cast iron, bronze and non-ferrous metals.
  • Efficiency: Enable higher cutting speeds and shorter machining times.

HSSE power drills are more expensive but offer better performance and durability for demanding drilling tasks.

An SDS-Plus hammer drill bit is a specially developed drill bit for use with rotary hammers. It is mainly used to drill holes in hard materials such as concrete, masonry and natural stone.

Features:

  • SDS-Plus holder: Enables quick tool changes and optimum power transmission.
  • Carbide tipping: Carbide cutting edges for high wear resistance.
  • Double helix: Ensures efficient removal of drill dust and reduced vibrations.

Areas of application:

  • Construction industry: Drilling holes for dowels, pipes or cables.
  • Renovation work: Removing tiles and breakthroughs in concrete.
  • Demolition work: Efficient chiseling and removal of materials.

SDS-Plus hammer drill bits are indispensable for precise and powerful work in demanding construction site environments.

HSS and HSSG drill bits differ as follows:

HSS drill bits (High Speed Steel):

  • Suitable for softer materials such as wood and plastics
  • Less expensive than HSSG drill bits
  • Versatile for general drilling work
  • Less precise than HSSG drill bits

HSSG drill bits (High Speed Steel Ground):

  • Have a precisely ground drill point
  • Offer higher accuracy and drilling quality
  • Suitable for precise drilling in metals
  • Longer tool life than standard HSS drill bits

Uses:

  • HSS drill bits: For general drilling work in softer materials
  • HSSG drill bits: For precise drilling in metals and harder materials where high accuracy is required

HSSG drill bits are the better choice for more demanding drilling tasks, while HSS drill bits are sufficient for simpler applications.

Countersinks offer the following advantages and applications:

  • Countersinking screw heads: They create a cone-shaped recess so that screw heads are flush with the surface.
  • Deburring drill holes: Countersinks with a 60° angle are used to remove sharp edges after drilling.
  • Facilitated thread cutting: Countersinking makes it easier to position the tap.
  • Precise machining: Enable particularly precise, chatter-free work.
  • Versatile application: Suitable for various materials such as metal, wood and plastics.
  • Aesthetic finish: Ensures a clean and professional appearance of screw connections.
  • Prevents material damage: Prevents the material from tearing when screwing in screws.

Countersinks are indispensable tools for precise and clean screw connections in various craft and industrial sectors.

Core hole drills are special tools for creating holes that serve as preparation for thread cutting:

  • Function: Produce holes with a central core.
  • Areas of application: Metalworking, construction (concrete, stone) and piping.
  • Advantages: Less wear, faster advance, especially with large diameters and hard materials.

Core hole drills are ideal for precise and efficient holes that serve as the basis for threaded inserts.

For optimum drilling results, specialized drill bits for different materials are recommended:

  • Wood drill bits: Have a centering tip and wide cutting edges for clean holes in wood.
  • Metal drill bits: Made of HSS or HSSE, with a special point angle for efficient drilling in metals.
  • Masonry drill bits: With carbide tip for hard materials such as concrete or masonry.

Reasons for specialized drill bits:

  • Adapted geometry for the respective material
  • Optimized cutting performance and service life
  • Reduced risk of material damage
  • More precise and cleaner drilling results

Universal drill bits are available, but often offer compromises in performance and service life.

To extend the life of drill bits, follow these care and maintenance tips:

  • Regular sharpening: Maintains cutting performance
  • Thorough cleaning: Removes chips and deposits
  • Lubrication: Reduces friction and wear
  • Proper storage: Protects against damage and corrosion
  • Correct usage: Prevents overloading and premature wear

These measures help keep your drill bits sharp and ready for use over the long term.

High-quality drill bits can be distinguished from inferior products by:

  • Material quality: Higher quality steels or carbides
  • Heat resistance: Better performance at high temperatures
  • Precision: More accurate cuts and drill holes
  • Coating: High-quality surface finish for longer durability
  • Brand reputation: Well-known manufacturers often offer better quality

When buying, pay attention to:

  • Material specifications (e.g. HSS, HSSE, carbide)
  • Coating type (e.g. TiN, TiAlN)
  • Application recommendations of the manufacturer

Invest in quality for better results and a longer service life.
