UNC – American Coarse Thread
Although the UNC thread is primarily used outside of Europe, you will occasionally encounter it here as well. It’s even better if you not only know what type of thread it is but also where to find the right tools for it. At BAER, you’ll find taps and accessories for the UNC standard thread, as well as many other national and international norms. Tools for specific sizes such as UNC 1/2, UNC 1/4, UNC 2, UNC 3/8 and UNC 5/16 are also available.
Everything you need to know about the American Unified Coarse Thread
The UNC thread originates from the United States and belongs to the Unified National thread family (UN). It is a coarse thread frequently used for fastening screws and represents the standard for connections between two components. The UNC thread is standardized according to ANSI/ASME B1.1. UNC stands for Unified National Coarse Thread. Previously, it was also known as NC. The coarse thread family also includes the fine threads UNF and UNEF. The flank angle of the UNC thread is 60°.
The UNC thread is widely used in the USA and in countries such as Australia and Japan. In Germany, its role is more indirect. When importing products from abroad, you may encounter UNC screws—particularly in technical fields such as PC housings or camera equipment.
The UNC thread is an inch-based thread, which is the key difference compared to metric threads. All measurements, such as the outer diameter, are given in inches, and the thread pitch is defined by the number of threads per inch. To work correctly with UNC threads, you should be able to convert metric dimensions into inch values. One inch equals 2.54 cm.
Despite similar applications and the same flank angle, UNC and metric M threads are not interchangeable. Screws and nuts of the two systems are not compatible. Never attempt to screw a UNC bolt into a metric internal thread or vice versa—you risk damaging the components.
To navigate UNC thread tables, it’s important to understand the naming convention: nominal diameter – pitch – abbreviation UNC. The nominal diameter refers to the external diameter in inches, while the pitch is given by the number of threads per inch. Examples: 1/4″–20 UNC, 5/8″–11 UNC, 1″–8 UNC or 1 1/8″–7 UNC. Threads with a nominal diameter smaller than 1/4 inch follow different numbering rules, using a fixed number instead of a diameter—for example: No. 1–64 UNC, #1–64 UNC, or N 1–64 UNC.
