BSB (British Standard Brass) and BSC (British Standard Cycle)
Among British thread types, there are also standards for special applications, such as BSB and BSC threads. The British Standard Brass thread is specifically designed for use in brass tubing. The British Standard Cycle thread is used on bicycles. As a manufacturer of threading tools, we are committed to supplying you with tools and accessories even for less common thread types. That’s why BSB and BSC threads are, of course, part of our catalog – just like any other thread type.
Everything you need to know about the British Standard Brass and British Standard Bicycle Thread
The BSB thread is a special-purpose thread for brass pipes with a fixed pitch. Since brass pipe wall thickness remains constant regardless of diameter, the pitch must also remain constant to avoid weakening the material. This pitch is consistently 26 threads per inch. The BSB thread has a 55° flank angle and is designated by the abbreviation BSB and the external diameter in inches – e.g., BSB 1/4″, BSB 1/2″, or BSB 1″.
The British cycle thread also maintains a consistent pitch of 26 TPI, with the exception of the first three of the 14 listed sizes, which use 40 or 32 TPI. Confusion with BSB is avoided in part because the BSC thread has a 60° flank angle – unlike most British thread types. Its designation follows the format of abbreviation and outer diameter in inches, e.g., BSC 1/4".
Our Product Range
In the BAER online shop, you’ll find everything you need to work with BSB and BSC threads. High-quality tools you can always rely on – that’s the BAER guarantee.
British Standard Brass Thread
To create internal threads, our BSB forming taps are the first choice. Made from high-quality HSSG in Form C with straight flutes, they are suitable not only for brass but for all easily machinable materials up to 800 N/mm². These taps cut the thread in one operation and can be used manually or with a machine – offering maximum flexibility.
External BSB threads are easy to cut precisely with our HSS round dies. These are available in a wide range of sizes. You can use them manually with a die holder – or with a suitable mount for machine-supported work.
British Standard Cycle Thread
You can machine the British cycle thread most efficiently with our BSC forming taps made of ground high-speed steel. Whether you use them manually or with a machine is entirely up to your preferred working method. The Form C geometry with straight flutes is ideal for through and blind holes up to 1.5× thread diameter.
External threads can be cut or recut precisely with our BSC dies. Of course, left-hand threads are also available – useful, for example, on bicycle pedals to prevent unintentional loosening. Our dies can be used by hand with a die holder or mounted in a machine.
