Twist drill bits for wood from BAER
Wood, stone, metal, concrete - in day-to-day business, craftsmen encounter a multitude of different materials. And all of them have special properties and need to be treated accordingly. Therefore, neither professionals nor do-it-yourselfers can do without a little knowledge of materials if they want to achieve optimum results.
Wood is a special case among the materials. On the one hand, it is quite soft and easy to work with. On the other hand, as a fast-growing, natural raw material, it has some special features and can sometimes be difficult to calculate. There are different types of wood, some of which vary greatly in hardness. Maple, yew, oak or ash, for example, are hardwoods. Soft softwoods such as spruce, pine or fir are particularly popular as building materials. A peculiarity of wood as a material is the many fibres that make up each board. The material is not homogeneous and therefore does not have the same properties everywhere.
You should therefore not take the handling of wood lightly and use specialised tools such as twist drill bit for wood. A high-quality wood drill bits and a little know-how are the best prerequisites for effortless woodworking. Of course, the screw tap manufacturer BAER is also a strong partner at your side when it comes to choosing the perfect drill for wood. wood drill bits from our range has all the features you need for easy woodworking. Drills for wood: What you have to watch out for
To prevent the fibres from splintering and fraying, you need a wood drill bits with particularly sharp cutting edges. These cut through the fibres cleanly and ensure a smooth finish. If, on the other hand, the cutting edges are blunt, they tear more than they cut. The result looks unclean and even entails a certain risk of injury due to splinters.
The starting point is a critical phase when drilling into wood, as you can easily slip off at this point. This leads to unsightly scratches or major damage, which can be very annoying. That is why drills for wood have a centre point. This digs into the material and holds the wood drill bits in place while you can start drilling in peace.
Due to the special material structure of wood, many long-fibre chips are produced during drilling, which can become compacted and then possibly clog the drill hole if they are not continuously removed. This task is performed by deep flutes in the wood drill bits.
Tips for clean drilling with the wood drill bits
Even though drilling in wood is easy compared to other materials and even works with a cordless screwdriver, there are still a few special points to bear in mind. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you don't need a special tool for this soft material. Of course, you can get a metal drill into the wood somehow, but the result would certainly not be satisfactory. With a special wood drill bits, on the other hand, you can drill clean and straight holes that are a sight to behold.
Splintering and fraying is a danger, especially at the edge of the exit hole. You can counteract this by using a professional wood drill with sharp cutting edges. Also, place a piece of scrap wood under the board into which your wood drill bits can penetrate. This reduces the risk of splinters. Alternatively, you can turn the board over before the wood drill bits comes out and finish drilling the hole from the other side, thus avoiding unsightly drill marks.
And after drilling with the wood drill? This is how the thread works
We wouldn't be BAER if we left it at the drill hole. Of course, wooden components can also be joined with wooden dowels, nails or screws. But it's best with a thread, isn't it? That's why you might be asking yourself the question, " Thread and wood, is that even possible? The answer is: yes, but with a little diversions.
Cutting a thread directly into the wood is not a very good idea at first, because the material does not have the necessary properties for a secure connection. You can remedy this with suitable thread inserts, such as those available in our BaerFix® Product line. The application is simple: First, you pre-drill a core hole of the appropriate size with our high-quality Baer wood drills. Then mount the BaerFix® thread insert and you have a durable thread. It's that easy!
