How do I use a thread cutting tool ratchet correctly?
Cutting a thread manually is often the fastest and easiest way – especially if you only need a single internal thread for a project or want to machine an awkward or hard-to-reach component. However, the quality of the internal thread produced depends not only on the screw tap used, but also on the holding tools you use.
A tap wrench or a standard ratchet with the appropriate attachment are suitable holding tools for screw taps. If you want to keep things simple and value high-quality work results, then it is worth investing in a special tap ratchet for screw taps. It helps you avoid mistakes and makes your work easier, so the thread almost cuts itself. How exactly does it work? We'll tell you if you keep reading.
What is special about this tool holder with ratchet?
First of all, it's the mechanism of the ratchet itself that significantly simplifies operation compared to a tap wrench. The thread cutting tool ratchet doesn't need to be repositioned; instead, it's simply moved back and forth repeatedly. This greatly speeds up the entire process because you don't have to change your grip. The ability to operate the ratcheting tool without constantly repositioning your hand also reduces physical strain when working in awkward positions. The tool holder with ratchet is suitable for left and right-hand operation, which you can switch using a small slider.
However, compared to a conventional tap ratchet, this special tool holder has several decisive advantages. It's designed to accommodate a square shank, so it can be used directly without adapters or other attachments. The handle on the tool holder can either be used in a centred position or extended in one direction. This allows you to flexibly adapt your tools to the respective working environment. A ratcheting thread cutting tool is ideal for thread cutting in locations that are difficult to access or confined spaces.
M3 - M10 and more: each holder is compatible with a wide range of screw taps
Every tool holder with ratchet for thread cutting is equipped with a square drive with two-jaw chuck, which can be opened and closed using a simple turning mechanism. In this way, it is possible to clamp tools of different types of thread and sizes into the ratchet. You therefore do not need a separate holding tool for each screw tap, but as a rule one or two items are sufficient to cover your entire requirement.
And by the way: Of course, in addition to screw taps, you can also clamp other tools with square drive into the holder. This turns the ratchet holding tool into a universally applicable helper that can be stored in a space-saving manner and is always at hand when it is needed.
And so it goes – what you need to pay attention to when using it
To create a thread with a ratchet holding tool, the same rules generally apply as when using hand screw taps. For thread cutting, it is necessary to drill a core hole diameter of the appropriate size for the desired thread. The hole should be clean to enable efficient thread cutting.
Clamp the screw tap in the two-jaw chuck with square drive and make sure that the holder is suitable for the desired size. Use the slider on the shaft to set whether you want to use the ratchet in LEFT HAND or right-hand rotation. Lastly, you must adjust the handle according to your needs. In most cases you can leave it centred, but in confined spaces it may be necessary to pull it out to one side.
The use of cutting oil or cutting spray minimises friction and increases tool life time when cutting. After approximately two full revolutions, the thread cutting tool should be carefully turned back to break off the chips.
