Do you also think that you always need a large appliance for thread cutting? That's a fallacy! Because thread cutting also works wonderfully with your normal drilling machine. All you need is a screw tap for the drilling machine. Even with a simple cordless screwdriver, thread cutting is no problem. So if you've always wanted to try your hand at threading but thought you didn't have the necessary equipment, take a closer look at our BAER bit screw taps for cordless screwdrivers.
Thread cutting with the drilling machine: It's that simple
The crux of thread cutting with a cordless screwdriver is the shank on the tool. This is because a screw tap ends in a square shank as standard. However, most hand drilling machines are designed for tools with a hexagonal shank. With the BAER screw taps for the drilling machine, we bring both together. The screw tap for cordless screwdrivers have a ¼" hexagonal shank that can be quickly and easily inserted into the bit holder of your machine. This means that the screw tap bit can be changed just as easily as you are used to with other bits for cordless screwdrivers.
What you need to consider when using a screw tap for the drilling machine.
Basically, the screw tap for the drilling machine works just like any other screw tap. The usual instructions therefore apply: Select the correct diameter for the core hole, use suitable lubricant and wear safety goggles to be on the safe side. However, thread cutting with a cordless screwdriver does have a few special features. We have a few tips for you on how to get the best out of the tap for the drill.
Set the drill for taps correctly
Before you get started, it is important to adjust the settings on your drilling machine for thread cutting. Our recommendation is to keep the speed as low as possible (0 - 450 rpm) and set the torque to the maximum. You should also always take the pitch into account when setting the speed. The rule of thumb is that the screw tap for the drilling machine should cover a distance corresponding to the pitch per revolution. The right settings will prevent you from overcutting your thread or damaging the screw tap for drilling machine.
Always keep the screw tap for drilling machine straight
An important factor that determines how well thread cutting works with the cordless screwdriver is a steady hand when guiding the machine. The main thing here is to keep the tap for the drill perpendicular at all times. This can be a particular challenge with hand-held tools. A stationary drilling machine does this for you, but with the screw tap in a hand drilling machine you have to manage this yourself. Take your time, ensure good positioning in relation to the workpiece and make sure you have a secure grip. Then you will achieve a clean end result even if you use a hand-held drilling machine for thread cutting.
It is best to use a slip clutch for thread cutting with a cordless screwdriver
Safety should also - or especially - be a top priority when thread cutting using a cordless screwdriver. Do not underestimate the power that even small devices can develop. This can be dangerous for your wrists if the screw tap for the drilling machine gets caught. If you do not release the trigger in time, the rotational movement can be transferred to the device and ultimately to your hand. When choosing your drill for thread cutting, make sure that the device has a slip clutch. This automatically prevents such accidents.
Which drilling machine do I need for thread cutting?
The bit tap fits in every bit holder. However, this does not mean that every drilling machine is suitable for thread cutting. There are a few things you should bear in mind. You should be able to freely adjust the torque on your device. It must also be possible to select both clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation and the cordless screwdriver should have a power rating of at least 7.5 volts. Most modern drilling machines should fulfill these requirements with ease. However, if you are working with an older or very inexpensive device, it is best to check the criteria again before you venture into thread cutting with the cordless screwdriver. Then you will also be able to produce clean threads with your hand tool.
Tapping adapters for cordless screwdrivers - a good alternative?
In addition to special taps for the drilling machine, there is another way to insert a square shank into a hexagon bit holder. A tapping adapter for cordless screwdrivers makes this possible. The adapter has a hexagonal shank and a square drive and can therefore be used perfectly as a link between the screw tap and the drilling machine. Is this variant a better alternative to the bit tap? If you need to purchase a new tool anyway in order to be able to cut threads with your drilling machine, then a special screw tap for the drilling machine is a good choice for you. After all, the fewer individual parts a connection consists of, the more stable it is. You can insert the screw tap for the drilling machine directly into the tool holder of your device without any intermediate steps. If, on the other hand, you already have the required screw tap with square shank, then the tapping adapter for cordless screwdrivers may be the more favourable alternative. Especially if you don't want to use the drilling machine for thread cutting regularly.
Screw tap bits in the BAER online shop
Choose between two different types of screw taps for the drilling machine in our web shop. The normal bit taps are ideal for thread cutting using a cordless screwdriver. And the combination drill taps for the drilling machine make thread cutting particularly easy, as three work steps can be carried out with just one tool. You drill the core hole, countersink it and cut the thread - all at once.
