PG – Steel Conduit Thread
In the field of electrical installations, the steel conduit thread was a major standard until a few decades ago. Its name stems from its application in threaded steel conduits used to protect electrical cables. Although the PG thread has long been replaced by a modern system using metric sizes, it still occasionally appears when spare parts or repairs to older installations are needed. For such cases, you’ll find all the necessary tools for working with the PG thread in the BAER online shop.
Everything you need to know about the PG thread according to DIN 40430
Until the 2000s, the PG thread was commonly used in steel conduits and cable glands to ensure sealed cable entries. It was replaced by metric thread sizes in the DIN EN 50262 standard (Cable glands for electrical installations). These are to be used in new designs. The two systems are not directly compatible, which can cause challenges that still lack practical solutions. This makes familiarity with the older standard even more important.
The PG thread is notable for its large flank angle of 80°, which results in a shallow thread depth—necessary to avoid weakening the thin walls of steel conduits. PG sizes are based on the cable diameter, which is listed alongside the nominal size in tables. While the pitch is usually given in millimeters, it is derived from threads per inch, resulting in uneven numbers.
The designation combines the abbreviation "Pg" with a nominal number that does not represent the actual outer diameter, e.g., Pg 11. The standard covers cable diameters ranging from 6 mm to 43 mm.
PG thread – Our product range
Although the PG thread according to DIN 40430 is no longer used in new designs, BAER continues to offer all the tools needed to manufacture, repair, and inspect this type of thread. We are committed to supporting your projects—even when they involve outdated thread types!
Taps
To cut internal PG threads, we offer high-quality single-cut taps made from HSSG. These taps can be used by hand or with a machine and produce the thread in just one operation. All sizes specified in DIN 40430 are available directly from stock.
Dies
Need to cut external PG threads? We’ve got you covered. Our dies are made of premium HSS for long service life and excellent performance. Available in all standard PG sizes and ready to ship.
Thread Gauges
In sensitive fields like electrical installations, precision and compliance with regulations and tolerances are essential. That’s why we offer thread gauges to reliably inspect your PG threads.
Go/no-go plug gauges are used for internal threads to ensure the thread is neither too large nor too small. When the go and no-go gauges are combined on one handle, it is referred to as a limit plug gauge. For external threads, we offer matching go and no-go ring gauges.
For maximum safety, we can calibrate your thread gauges in-house. Simply add calibration to your order and specify which gauges require it in the comment field—we’ll handle the rest!
