Optimal quality and maximum flexibility – these are the poles between which many home and hobbyist craftspeople regularly find themselves. There is something almost meditative about setting up a large pillar drill, clamping tools and workpieces, carefully making the right adjustments...but it does take time. Aside from the fact that not every enthusiastic hobbyist can afford an extensive workshop setup that covers all eventualities. You could easily start dreaming about cutting your threads with a simple cordless drill.

And it doesn't have to remain a dream, because it is actually possible. However – you might have guessed – there are quite a few things to keep in mind. But that's what our blog posts are for! We explain how to fit the square drive of your machine screw tap into the drill chuck of your cordless drill, what tricks and tips help ensure success, and we also address the most important question: threading with a cordless drill – can that really be a good idea? If you're wondering about that too, then be sure to keep reading this blog post!

Threading with a cordless drill: These are your options

To clarify straight away: we're talking about a cordless drill here, not a hand drill. In other words, the type of device that you can often get cheaply at a discount store and which is equipped with a bit holder. That's the problem, because the holder is designed for a hexagonal shank, but most screw taps require a proper drill chuck with clamping jaws and a square drive.

Establishing compatibility with a thread-cutting adapter

A thread cutting adapter allows you to insert a drill chuck into the bit socket of your cordless drill, in which you can then clamp an ordinary screw tap. This is practical if you only own a cordless drill, as it allows you to significantly expand its range of functions in this way. The thread cutting adapter is only suitable for hand screw taps and single-flute screw taps.

Bit thread cutting tools, so to speak, approach the problem from the other direction. Here it is not the machine that adapts, but rather the tool, as the thread cutting tool is fitted with a hexagonal shank that fits wonderfully into the cordless drill. Bit thread cutting tools are available for many common standards and diameters, so you can select the right tool for your cutting task. However, you will find it difficult to work very hard cases such as stainless steel; in such cases, you should instead resort to specialised tools and equipment.

Feasible, but also sensible? When you can use a cordless drill for thread cutting

Let's be honest: if you have other options for creating your thread, then the cordless drill should not be your first choice. Simply because it is a task that these devices are not perfectly designed for. Not only will it be more difficult for you to produce a really clean thread, there is also always the risk that you will damage your tool.

However, there are of course numerous situations in which you simply have no other options or a battery-powered device is just very practical. Perhaps you are on the road or in the garden and do not have access to your complete equipment. Or you simply want to carry out a small repair and if you would have to purchase extra tools and equipment for that, you could just as well consider buying a completely new component. In such cases where flexibility is more important than requirements for precision and quality, you are welcome to use the cordless drill.

Safety first: what you must pay special attention to when using a hand-operated machine

For everything to work properly, you must pay even more attention to clean working practices than usual. Creating a straight thread by hand is not that easy, because when thread cutting, the cordless drill must be held exactly perpendicular to the workpiece. It is therefore important to secure the workpiece well during cutting to prevent it from slipping and to achieve a precise result. Exact guidance of the cordless drill is essential to avoid breaking the screw tap. Thread cutting with the cordless drill also requires low rotational speeds, torque limitation and lubricant. Even pressure application during thread cutting ensures that the thread is clean and accurate. Pay attention to the speed based on the pitch: with each revolution, the drill should advance into the workpiece in the axial direction by this value.

Also ensure that you use a high-quality device. Powerful cordless drills offer the option of limiting torque. When thread cutting with a cordless drill, it can become dangerous if the screw tap jams in the core hole diameter. A cordless drill with a slip clutch can help prevent injuries by disengaging the drive when torque is exceeded.

Well served in the BAER range – Our offering for thread cutting with cordless drills

The use of specialised thread cutting tool bits can significantly increase efficiency when thread cutting. This is because power transmission works more smoothly the fewer components are involved. The bit tap fits directly into the cordless drill chuck without an intermediate piece or adapter.

In the BAER online shop, you have a choice between two categories: bit taps and combo bit taps. The bit taps made from HSSG are available individually or in practical sets, ranging from M 3 to M 10.

Particularly practical are our combination bit screw taps. With these, you can not only effortlessly create threads with the cordless drill, but also produce the core hole diameter at the same time. In comparison, you save yourself an entire work step. Here too, you can choose whether you want to purchase just a single screw tap individually, or get the complete set for thread sizes M3 to M10.
