G (BSP) – Pipe Threads
Across Europe, the Whitworth pipe thread is the most commonly used thread form for installations in kitchens and bathrooms – and anywhere pipe joints are created using threaded connections. In Germany, this thread is primarily known as the G thread. At BAER you will find everything you need to machine this and other pipe thread types. For every material and application, we provide the right taps, holding tools, and accessories.
Everything you need to know about the Whitworth pipe thread (BSP)
A pipe thread such as the British Standard Pipe is used wherever connections between pipes, fittings, and valves are required – typically for transporting liquids or gases, less often solids.
Pipe threads are generally divided into tapered and parallel forms. British Standard Pipe connections have a parallel internal and a parallel external thread, meaning the diameter remains constant along the entire length. Examples of tapered pipe threads include BSPT with the designation Rc and the R thread used as the external form. These threads are standardized in ISO 7/1.
The Whitworth thread is an imperial thread; the pitch is indicated by the number of threads per inch. The flank angle is 55°. The designation consists of the prefix G and the diameter in inches – for example, G 1/4". Other common sizes include G 1/8", G 1/2", G 3/8", G 3/4", G 5/8" and G 7/8".
The BSP thread is used for non-sealing-in-the-thread connections. Sealing requires an additional medium such as hemp or PTFE tape. Other pipe thread types such as BSPT, BSPP, or NPT achieve sealing directly through their thread geometry.
The diameter often causes confusion: the outside diameter of a 1" pipe thread is not 25.4 mm but about 33 mm. The reason lies in the historical wall thickness of pipes, where the ratio between outer and inner diameter differed from today.
G pipe threads according to DIN ISO 228-1 (DIN 259) – Our range
At BAER you will find all the tools and matching accessories you need for working with BSP threads.
Taps for G threads
You can produce internal threads either manually or by machine. BAER always offers the right tool for the job.
Spiral-point taps
Our HSSG spiral-point taps are especially versatile as they can be used by hand or by machine. Form D with straight flutes is suitable for blind and through holes.
Hand taps
Hand taps for Whitworth pipe threads are available for standard applications with right- or left-hand threads and for high-strength materials. Tools are supplied individually or as two-piece sets.
Machine taps
We also offer a variety of machine taps: Form B with lead chamfer for through holes, Form C with 35° right-hand spiral for blind holes, and left-hand variants.
Thread formers for G threads
If you prefer chip-free thread forming, our HSSE-TiN thread formers produce exceptionally smooth surfaces and increased material strength.
Dies for G threads
Our dies enable easy production of external threads. We stock round dies for standard and left-hand threads as well as a version for stainless steel. We also offer hexagonal dies for right- and left-hand threads – ideal for repairs or hard-to-reach areas since they can be used with an open-end wrench.
Thread gauges for G threads
Our gauges for Whitworth G (BSP) ensure that all dimensions, tolerances, and pitch comply with DIN standards. You will find go and no-go plug gauges, combined limit plug gauges, and ring gauges for checking external threads.
Sets and assortments
Make things easy: choose sets containing all necessary tools. From compact tap-only or die-only kits to comprehensive assortments that include both, plus holders and accessories.
