Round cutting die for the perfect external thread
Our thread cutting die for external threads is a very effective, precise and stable cutting tool that is mainly used in plant engineering. We offer the ideal working material for companies that process metals and steels, in a large selection and of course in the best and highest BAER quality.
Of course, you will also find the corresponding counterpart here - the screw tap for creating internal threads. In addition, we offer you competent and friendly advice right from the selection of the desired thread cutting die. We will also be happy to help you with tips for the correct handling and application of the thread cutting die.
Browse through our extensive range of thread cutting dies for standard and fine threads now and then order the desired items easily online at BAER Tools!
The appearance and function of thread cutting dies
A thread cutting die can be used to cut external metal threads. It is therefore the corresponding counterpart to the screw tap, which is used for cutting internal threads. The thread cutting die is usually made of high-speed steel, is cylindrical in shape and has several cutting parts with which the threads are cut evenly. Between these cutting edges are holes, so-called chip holes, through which the metal chips can roll off. Further holes for retaining screws are worked into the outer edge.
At thread cutting, the thread is first fixed before the thread cutting die is set at a right angle. Then it is turned - by hand or by machine - until the required total length of the external thread has been reached. Thread cutting dies are mainly used for pipes and lines that are required in the plumbing sector. To reduce wear during frequent use, we recommend using a cutting oil as a lubricant.
A large selection of thread cutting dies for fine threads
The common thread cutting die for standard threads are particularly popular for our customers, but we are equally large in the area of fine threads. Here we can offer you an enormous range of different tools designed for fine threads. This is mainly due to the fact that fine threads are used more frequently in certain areas, as they have decisive advantages.
Difference between metric regular and fine threads
Both metric threads are defined according to DIN 13 and have the same thread angle of 60°. The standard thread and the fine thread differ in the pitch, i.e. the distance from thread tip to thread tip. While the standard thread i.e. for M 10 always has a pitch of 1.5, fine threads can also have pitches of 0.5 / 0.75 / 1 or 1.25.
Advantages and disadvantages of the fine thread
Unfortunately, a fine thread is susceptible to contamination, defects or seizure. In addition, it is not suitable for high-speed assembly, as it quickly becomes wedged. On the other hand, it is stronger and ideally suited for precision connections.
The advantages are clearly the small thread depth, the narrow thread profile and the higher contact pressure. This means that products with fine threads can also be used in confined spaces. They are particularly popular in measurement technology.
Due to the higher self-locking, fine threads are ideal for critical connections that are exposed to vibrations or other high loads, for example. Fine threads can withstand more stress in most materials and enable a more stable connection. They do not loosen as quickly and can also be installed in hard materials. They also require less torque when cutting the thread.
Thread cutting dies for fine threads
Here you have the choice between different tap (hand taps, machine taps), forming taps, thread plug gauges and ring gauges as well as:
- Round thread cutting die: for normal applications, for left-hand thread, HSSE with spiral point (spiral entry), for stainless steels, with undersize/tolerance 6e
- Hexagonal die nut (from MF 3 x 0.35 to MF 52 x 3.0 HSS)
- Thread cutting sets and workshop kits
Our extensive range of thread cutting dies for regular threads
We stock both individual thread cutting dies and sets suitable for machining a wide range of materials.
Our thread cutting dies are ideal for general use on a variety of materials such as: Structural, free-cutting and case-hardened steels, unalloyed heat-treatable steels, copper, bronze or various plastics. The possible materials are explained in more detail in the respective product description.
Individual thread cutting dies from BAER
In stock we have thread cutting dies according to DIN 20401(tolerance 7e) and DIN 513 (tolerance 7e) in different dimensions, with which you can cut the most different external threads. Thread cutting dies according to DIN 20401 are metric buttress threads for fine threads and are available from us with a pitch of 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm. The metric buttress thread according to DIN 513 for general use is available with pitches from 2 mm to 3 mm. The two variants are suitable for general structural steels, case-hardening steels, unalloyed heat-treatable steels, pure copper and plastics, among others. In addition, we offer a thread cutting die according to Deckel standard 1.596.01. The special buttress thread is suitable, for example, for collets or sleeves on lid, tool and milling machines.
Thread cutting die sets from BAER
With us you will find a large selection of different screw taps and thread cutting dies for metric coarse threads and many other thread standards. We carry suitable sets from HSS thread cutting dies for normal applications in the Dimensions M3 to M12 - also for left-hand thread and stainless steels.
The thread cutting dies are suitable for these materials:
The sets for right-hand and left-hand thread are suitable for machining the following materials: e.g. for general structural steels, free-cutting steels or case-hardening steels, unalloyed heat-treatable steels, pure copper / low-alloyed copper, copper-tin alloys (bronze) as well as plastics (PMMA, POM, PVC).
The sets for stainless steels are suitable for machining stainless steels, difficult-to-machine materials up to 1200 N/mm² (the repair set up to 800 N/mm²) as well as for general use.
Our popular thread cutting die sets include, for example:
