If you've already browsed our online shop – and we'll assume you have – then you may have noticed the "actuation tools" category. This term brings together a group of inconspicuous but extremely important tools, whose members share one thing in common: they are all holders for thread cutting tools.

If you mainly work with machines or are just getting started with thread cutting, you may never have had the opportunity to use an actuation tool yourself. It's certainly worth adding one or two examples to your workshop equipment! If you'd like to know why, and which holding tool might be right for you, you're in luck – because that's exactly what we'll clarify in today's blog post.

When do you need holding tools?

Holding tools are primarily of interest to you if you want to cut threads by hand. Because a screw tap alone won't get you very far. Even if you mostly use a machine – for re-tapping or repairs, it's often more practical to lend a hand in the true sense of the word. And there are some places you simply can't reach with a drilling machine; in such cases, a screw tap combined with an actuation tool is worth its weight in gold.

Thread cutting tool holders are essential for the precise production of internal threads and external threads without a machine. They hold screw taps or thread cutting tools securely in place throughout the entire process and feature handles that ensure optimal power transmission. This is particularly important when used manually, as you rely entirely on your muscle strength. Depending on the design, they also have further practical characteristics such as a ratchet or adjustable handles that make manual thread cutting even easier for you.

What types of holding tools are there?

Fundamentally, one distinguishes between holding tools for screw taps, with which you can produce internal threads, and holders for thread cutting tools, with the help of which you can create external threads. Besides these, there is further optional accessories and small aids that can be useful depending on the intended purpose and should be used.

Tap wrenches for screw taps and other tools with square drive

The tap wrench is as simple in its design as it is effective. It consists of a robust and almost always adjustable square drive, to which two handles are attached. An adjustable tap wrench can accommodate square shanks of various screw tap sizes (e.g. M3 to M12), so you don't have to buy a separate holding tool for each screw tap. The handles can often be unscrewed, which can be practical when you need to work in confined spaces and only want to use one handle, for example.

Tool holder with ratchet function

A tool holder with ratchet also allows clamping of tools with square drive in different sizes. The special feature is the ratchet, which enables continuous working without repositioning your grip. High-quality tool holders with ratchet also have an adjustable handle that can either be used in the centre or fully extended in one direction. This also makes use in corners and tight spaces easier.

Tap extensions

These are accessories for a screw tap holder that are used when you want to produce particularly deep-lying threads. The extension can be inserted into a holding tool like the tap itself and also has a square drive socket at the other end. In this way, the machining depth can be significantly increased.

Die holder

A die holder is required to produce an external thread. It features a round body that is perfectly matched to the die in diameter and height, and completely encloses it. The screws on the die holder engage in the tapped holes of the die and hold it securely in the housing. The die holder also has two detachable handles.

As special accessories we recommend die stock guides – especially in applications where precision is paramount. These useful inserts assist you in keeping the die holder always perfectly plumb to the bolt. When working freehand, this is not easy at all!

What to look out for when buying a holder

When purchasing holding tools and accessories, you should first and foremost pay attention to the quality of materials and workmanship, as this is crucial for longevity and reliability. Holding tools are manufactured from materials such as zinc die casting or steel, and when selecting them, you should always keep the intended use in mind. Robust holding tools make it much easier to tackle hard materials and difficult cutting tasks.

Before making your purchasing decision, also inform yourself thoroughly about the holder's features. Adjustable or detachable handles are essential if you want to remain flexible and have sufficient freedom of movement even in confined spaces.

Moreover, you must pay careful attention to the correct size of your actuating tool. While holders are always designed for a certain range of dimensions, this does not make them universal tools that fit everything. Therefore, check which thread sizes the holder is suitable for in order to avoid making a wrong purchase.
