General technical questions
Thread standards can be distinguished by several characteristics:
- Measurement system: Metric (mm) or imperial (inch)
- Thread profile: Diameter, pitch and flank angle
- Thread type: Fastening or movement thread
- Area of application: General or industry-specific
There are various reasons for the diversity of thread standards. On the one hand, many countries have developed their own standards since the 19th century, which still exist today. As a result, there are regional differences, as countries such as Germany, Great Britain and the USA sometimes use different thread standards.
There are also special requirements in certain sectors, such as the automotive or aviation industries, which require their own standards. In addition, many thread standards have been adapted so that they can withstand special loads or enable high precision.
A metric ISO standard thread, also known as an M thread, is the European standard for fastening threads. It is characterized by the following features:
- Unit of measurement: All dimensions are given in millimetres
- Flank angle: Characteristic 60° angle
- Distribution: Standard thread in Europe and many other countries
- Application: Widely used in industry, mechanical engineering and everyday life
BAER offers a wide range of threading tools for metric ISO standard threads, including taps and dies. These tools ensure precise and standard-compliant thread production for a wide range of applications.
The most important distinguishing features are:
- Metric: millimeters
- UNC/UNF and Whitworth: inches
- Metric: Distance between two thread tips in mm
- UNC/UNF and Whitworth: Number of threads per inch
- Metric and UNC: 60°
- Whitworth: 55°
- Metric: Europe and worldwide
- UNC: USA, Australia, Japan
- Whitworth: Great Britain
BAER offers threading tools for these different standards to meet international standards and ensure a wide range of applications.
There are numerous types of threads
- Coarse thread / standard thread: Usually found on screws and nuts and is optimally designed for tight screw connections in applications without special requirements. Examples: Metric standard thread (M) or Unified coarse thread (UNC)
- Fine pitch thread: Allows precise adjustments using an adjusting screw thanks to its small pitch and has good self-locking properties, which prevent a screw from loosening by itself due to vibrations. Examples: Metric fine thread (MF) or Unified National Fine (UNF)
- Pipe thread: Especially designed for use in plumbing, heating and air conditioning technology for pipes, pipe connections and fittings. Can be conical or cylindrical and produce sealing connections in the thread. Examples: Whitworth pipe thread (G) or National Pipe Thread (NPT)
- Movement thread: Can convert a rotary movement into a longitudinal movement, e.g. in presses, lifting systems or on the spindles of machine tools. Examples: Trapezoidal thread (Tr) or Saw thread (S)
- Special threads: Threads whose dimensions and geometries are precisely tailored to a specific application. Examples: Valve threads (Vg) or Aerospace threads (MJ)
BAER offers specialized tools for all thread types to ensure precise and application-oriented solutions.
The designation of metric standard threads follows a standardized system:
- Prefix “M”: Stands for “metric” thread.
Structure of the designation:
- Basic form: M + outer diameter in mm
- Example: M8 for an 8 mm thread
This designation system enables the thread parameters to be clearly identified and makes it easier to select suitable fasteners for various applications. For metric fine pitch threads, the pitch is also specified. Example: M8 x 1 for an 8 mm thread with 1 mm pitch.
Standard threads and fine threads differ in their pitch:
- Standard thread: Larger pitch for faster installation and less sensitive to dirt. Used for standard fastening screws.
- Fine thread: Smaller pitch, ideal for precise applications such as measuring or adjusting screws and high vibration environments (good self-locking).
BAER offers tools for both types to meet different requirements.
The most commonly used metric thread sizes are:
- M5: 5 mm outer diameter
- M6: 6 mm outside diameter
- M8: 8 mm outside diameter
- M10: 10 mm outside diameter
- M12: 12 mm outside diameter
BAER offers a wide range of threading tools such as taps, thread formers and dies for these common thread sizes. These tools are optimally matched to the respective thread sizes and ensure precise and efficient thread production.
No, metric threads are not always right-handed. Most are right-hand threads, but there are also left-hand threads, which are marked “LH”. Left-hand threads are used to prevent self-loosening, for example in bicycle pedals, or as a safety mechanism to prevent incorrect screw connections, e.g. in gas connections. BAER offers tools for both types of threads to meet specific requirements.
The following tools are used as standard for the production and repair of threads:
- For internal threads (IG)
- Available in hand and machine versions
- For external threads (AG)
- Ideal for precise external thread production
BAER offers a wide range of these tools, adapted to different requirements and thread types. The range also includes accessories such as lubricants and die holders, tools for pre- and post-processing as well as for checking threads such as twist drills, countersinks or thread gauges and much more.
The selection of the correct thread size is based on:
- Outer diameter: Determines the basic strength of the connection.
- Pitch: Affects strength and assembly characteristics.
The choice depends on the required strength, specific application and material. BAER offers advice and suitable threading tools for every application.
