How a good threading tool is made
Precision, care and a large portion of experience are the ingredients that make tapping tools from BAER something very special. But how is a tap or thread former made from these? We'll show you what matters along the way.
The materials are crucial
It all starts with the materials used. Low-quality steel leads to an unclean thread and tool breakage. That's why we choose high-quality high-speed steels (HSS) that are heat-resistant and have outstanding cutting properties.
From the blank to the tap
A blank is formed from the high-speed steel , which is initially still soft and is alternately heated and cooled during the tempering process. This ensures the special hardness of the subsequent threading tools.
The grooves, chamfer and the thread itself are then ground into shape. Great care is required here, as this is work in the micrometre range. The surface of the tap and the machining of the cutting edges are particularly important.
