A lead screw is the part of a machine tool that transmits feed or movement over long distances by means of a thread – e.g. in clamping devices.
The lead-in is the front portion of a tap or die where the thread "engages" and the cutting process begins. When tapping threads, this means: The lead-in makes it easier to position the tool and reduces cutting forces. The lead-in zone influences how cleanly the thread starts and how much load acts on the cutting edges.
Lubricants are substances applied between two surfaces in relative motion to reduce friction and wear. They also serve for heat dissipation, corrosion protection, cleaning and can be used for power transmission.
