A hand tap is a tool for precisely cutting internal threads without machine assistance. It is operated manually using a holding tool – usually a tap wrench or ratchet handle.
HSS stands for High Speed Steel and designates a high-speed tool steel developed specifically for cutting tools. It is characterised by high hardness, wear resistance and hot hardness and enables working at significantly higher cutting speeds than conventional tool steel. HSS is the standard material for drills, taps, dies and milling tools in metalworking.
HSSE stands for a high-performance high-speed steel (High Speed Steel) alloyed with cobalt – i.e. HSS with an additional cobalt content.
HSSG (or HSS-G) stands for "high-speed steel ground". The "G" denotes drills or tools with a ground surface and sharp cutting edge.
