Thread Cutter
A thread cutter is a tool or collective term for tools used to produce threads. This includes both taps for creating internal threads and dies for producing external threads. Thread cutters generally work by chip removal, cutting material along the thread line to form the desired thread profile.
Types of thread cutters:
- Taps: Cut internal threads in pre-drilled holes, manually or by machine, often in several stages.
- Dies: Produce external threads on bolts, rods or screws, usually in a single pass.
Application:
Thread cutters are used in metalworking, mechanical engineering and maintenance to create precision-fit threaded connections or to rework damaged threads. Depending on the workpiece material, they are made from HSS, HSSE or carbide and are available for metric and inch thread standards.
