Thread Flank
Thread flanks are the inclined sides of a thread turn – i.e. the surfaces between the thread crest and thread root.
Significance:
- Shape and surface of the flanks influence friction, load capacity and sealing.
- Inaccurate or worn flanks lead to play, vibration and reduced strength.
Practical example:
If a screw moves slightly or wobbles, the flanks may be worn or damaged – repair with an insert or realignment may be needed.
