Turning Tool
A turning tool is a tool for cutting threads on lathes (e.g. on the lathe bed) or CNC turning centres.
Characteristics:
- Typically made from indexable inserts or solid cutting edges.
- Cuts the external thread directly on the rotating workpiece, rather than using a die or tap.
Practical example:
For external threads on a shaft or bolt on the lathe: the turning tool is traversed along the shaft and forms the thread profile in several passes.
