Thread runout refers to the zone at the end of a thread where the thread gradually terminates and is no longer fully profile-forming.

- The transition between thread and smooth surface must be designed to avoid sudden stress concentrations.
Practical example:
On an external thread, the thread ends before the screw head or a seal – this is where the runout zone begins.
